As in the past, the PTA has remained an incredibly
powerful and positive force in the life of Jefferson School, bringing a
wealth of cultural events, as well as “Family Fun” events to the school.
-
The children’s participation in the PTA-sponsored
Reflections Program is inspiring; and the fact that one of our students
earned national recognition is a source of pride. Beyond the fruits of the
PTA’s efforts, a concerted effort was placed on capitalizing on our
strength as a school/neighborhood community to reach out beyond ourselves,
and to bring our resources to bear on charitable causes.
The following activities exemplify the “strength in
numbers” that was so evident this past year:
-
Blood drive (30 pints)
-
We held an inspiring assembly on Veteran’s Day to
honor the people who have served our country. We were thrilled that so
many veterans responded to our invitation with their presence in seats of
honor. This will remain an annual event.
-
We held a food drive for the local pantry, plus
assembled “Thanksgiving Baskets” for families in need.
-
Coat drive (approximately 150 coats were collected
and donated to Social Services).
-
We coordinated our efforts to assure that any
children from families in need, and associated with Jefferson School,
would have a holiday season that would be brightened by gifts.
-
Math-a-thon ($10,000 was raised for the benefit of
the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital).
-
Pennies for Patients ($1700 was raised for the
Society of Leukemia and Lymphoma).
-
“Dollars for Lila” raised approximately $700 for
the Lila Salazar Fund .
-
Roxbury C.A.R.E.S., to which the evening
performance of the fourth grade musical was dedicated, was the beneficiary
of approximately $300 in donations.
-
“Volunteer
Appreciation Week” included a waffle brunch, to which all volunteers in
our Roxbury Community were invited.
-
We planted 10 trees in the back of the school,
hopefully creating a legacy of shade for the future generations of
Jefferson students, staff, and faculty.
