Kennedy School Accomplishments

Kennedy School is proud to share the following accomplishments for
the 2006-2007 school year.

 

Kennedy School Academic Accomplishments

  • Seventeen students participated in the Fourth Grade Knowledge Bowl. One was on the Runner–up team and another was on the Champion team.
     

  • Nine students participated in the District Spelling Bee and the winner was a Kennedy student.
     

  • All classes participated in challenging computer projects, which enhanced performance for more independent work. 
     

  • Approximately 80 students participated the School-wide Science Fair with an assortment of creative projects.
     

  • Science Night was planned for grades 3 and 4 students to follow written instructions while working with family members with scientific experiments (Enrichment).
     

  • Two separate Math Nights resulted in outstanding successes as they entered the second year with 65 students attending in grades K-2 and about 70 youngsters attending in grades 3-4.  It was an extension of the Enrichment Program to involve families with the support of the math curriculum by applying concepts to solve mathematical puzzles. 
     

  • The Media Specialist encouraged all students to participate in the 360 Minute Reading Program.  As a result of this event, 224 students read more than the 360 minutes, earning themselves a certificate and free ticket to Great Adventure. 
     

  • Library awards resulted from the Newbery Contest with ten final winners and one special award for a youngster who read all of the books in the third grade contest.  Five fourth graders won this award with special awards for reading all the books in the fourth grade contest going to two students.
     

  •  In Physical Education, 77 students received National Fitness Awards.
     

  • Three received the National Presidential Fitness Awards.  Also in PE, a goal was set to walk enough miles to go to Disneyland in California (2,752 miles).  The total student population walked 5,504 miles, far exceeding goal set.
     

  •  President’s Education Awards Program for 4th graders – approximately 30% of the 4th graders received this award for outstanding academic excellence.
     

  • The Fall Art Show reflected a display of creative colors and designs many students at the Ledgewood Mall.  The Spring Art Show had displays of 3-dimentional works as well as prints, sketches and a variety of media creations.  The students made impressive pottery projects, including Father’s Day gifts to replace the Father’s Day novelty gift sale with child-made items.
     

  • Four Roxbury Foundation for Educational Excellence grants were received and will be implemented in the 2007-2008 school year.

Kennedy School Extra Curricular Accomplishments / Key Events

·        Newcomers’ Breakfast organized and conducted by school counselor.

·        Media sponsored Author’s Day - Beatrix Potter expert was special guest.

·        Kindergarten Monster Parade.

·        Halloween Parade.

·        First, second and third grades performed classroom plays focusing black heroes, friends and friendship, countries around the world, the water cycle, and Thanksgiving.

·        Fourth graders participated in Newbery Bowl.

·        Fourth Grades engaged in Classroom City project, which enhanced understanding in areas of civics, government, economics and entrepreneurship.

·        Celebration of Dr. Seuss’s birthday with special readers from the community sharing with our students. 

·        Read-Across-America with special guest magician.

·        Winter Choral Presentation.

·        Spring Choral Presentation.

·        Talent Show # 1 and 2.

·        Chess played every Tuesday with parent volunteers to support understanding and direction during lunch.

·        Cultural Arts experiences – A Family Album, Sweet Potato Pie and such, Dugan’s Hooligan’s Celtic Ensemble, A Tale from the Latin World, The Alley Cats, and High Touch/High Tech – diversified group of programs to enrich our children through PTA sponsored programs.

·        Room Representative Tea.

·        Third grade poetry presentation accompanied with the development of original poetry compiled by each student in a poetry booklet.

·        Breakfast for Champions is a first grade reading event that inspires young readers.

·        Parade of Countries is a first grade event in which children dress up in costumes that reflects their culture and heritage and parade around the school.

·        Art Show of all student works Grades 1-4 displayed throughout Kennedy in the spring.

·      The Parent Advisory committee consists of our PTA Executive Committee. They have great insight, which helps to unite school and home.  Their fund-raising efforts have provided Kennedy agenda books for all third and fourth grade students.  Parents raised funds through projects such as Market Day, Cartridge Recycle, Family Portraits, Spirit Wear Sale, Original Art Works, Cell Phone Recycle, Entertainment Books, Bensi Day, and Scholastic Book Fair.  Their dedication has provided us with a Movie Night, Bingo Night, Mother’s Day Plant Sale, and Holiday Boutique.  Parents served as readers at our Dr. Seuss Night.
