Differentiated Instruction =
Shaping Instruction and Learning

With the arrival of spring, came a new initiative in the Roxbury School District.  This initiative comes in the form of unified staff development for all K-12 staff.  The focus of this training is Differentiated Instruction.

What is differentiated instruction ?  What does differentiated instruction look like? Why is the Roxbury School District making a commitment to this philosophy?  How can I support this initiative with my child at home?  Read on to learn the answers to these important questions...

What is differentiated instruction?...

"Differentiated instruction is a way of thinking, not a formula or recipe.  Educators draw on, apply and adapt its tools with the goal of maximizing knowledge, understanding and skill for the full range of learners.  Effective differentiation guides educators in thinking effectively about whom they teach, where they teach and how they teach in order to ensure that what they teach provides each student with maximum power as a learner."
Carol Ann Tomlinson and Jay McTighe, Integrating Differentiated Instruction and Understanding by Design, 2006

"In differentiated instruction, classroom teachers make vigorous attempts to meet students where they are in the learning process and move them along as quickly and as far as possible in the context of a mixed-ability classroom.  It promotes high-level and powerful curriculum for all students, but  varies the level of teacher support, task complexity, pacing and avenues to learning based on student readiness, interest and learning profile.  Differentiation seems a common sense approach to addressing the needs of a wide variety of learners, promoting equity and excellence and focusing on best practice instruction in mixed ability classrooms."
Carol Ann Tomlinson, The Education Digest, January, 2000

What does differentiated instruction look like?

Teachers can differentiate instruction by tapping into students different readiness levels, learning styles and  interests.  In a differentiated class, the teacher uses a variety of ways for students to explore curriculum content, a variety of sense making activities or processes through which students can come to understand and "own" information and ideas and a variety of options through which students can demonstrate or exhibit what they have learned.
Carol Ann Tomlinson, The Differentiated Classroom:  Responding to the Needs of All Learners, 1999.

Why is the Roxbury School District making a commitment to this philosophy?

The Roxbury School District recognizes that students already come to school differentiated.  They have a broad range of academic readiness, interests, learning profiles, modes of learning and cultures.  In order for the district to maximize the potential of each of these children, we recognize the need to meet each child at his or hers starting point and ensure growth each and every school year.
