Steve Jaskowak, a well-known Ceramic artist and teacher has visited Eisenhower Middle School four times throughout the year as the Artist in Residence for Mrs. Pessolano’s Art classes.

Through his time at EMS, Professor Jaskowak has demonstrated clay, as well as, sharing with the students his own work. His visits have allowed the students to experience his knowledge in a small group setting, as well as, provide an excellent introduction into the Ceramic Media unit, which is new to the Art curriculum.

EMS is currently celebrating its first year of Ceramic Media since receiving a new kiln provided by both the EMS PTA and the Roxbury Foundation for Excellence in Education. Their contributions have provided the funding for a rich learning experience.

If you are interested in receiving more information about the Artist in Residence program, please contact Mrs. M. Pessolano at mpessolano@roxbury.org.

On Thursday April 17, Ms. Damelio’s Reading & Language Arts class welcomed guest speaker Corporal Mike Munley. As a Corporal in the United State Marine Corp, Mr. Munley is an advocate for freedom, its importance, and the price military men and women pay in order for all Americans to possess it.

To parallel the class’s unit on letter writing, Mr. Munley presented a PowerPoint presentation describing the various jobs and duties of Marines. Included within his presentation were pictures of the desert in Iraq, equipment the Marines operate daily, as well as photographs portraying the sacrifices the military makes in order to ensure the freedom of every United States citizen.

To illustrate his points he specifically discussed his close friend and fellow platoon member Sergeant Robertson, who has spent the last 12 years in the Marine Corp. In addition, Mr. Munley passed around Meals Ready to Eat (MRE’s), which are the meals Marines have as their breakfast, lunch, and dinner. After, students tried on some of Mr. Munley’s camouflage uniforms, which allowed them to experience the weight of their gear.

Once the class was over, it was apparent that each student had gained a stronger appreciation for the men and women who fight within our armed forces, their sacrifices, their duties, and their selflessness. In order to show their appreciation, students will be writing formal letters to Sergeant Robertson who is currently serving in Iraq.

In celebration of Earth Day on April 22, 2008, Eisenhower Middle School ESL students completed a planter project which required them to build wooden planters, decorate them, and plant flowers in them. The planters were donated to Mrs. Marsac, the ESL teacher, by Diana Sherman of At-Home Services at Home Depot in Hackettstown. In response to the donation, the ESL students wrote business letters to Mrs. Sherman thanking her for the donation. In addition, they mailed a thank-you poster showing photos of the students completing the planter project.
