2008/2009
The Chess Club and Chess Team are open to any 7th or 8th grade student currently enrolled in and attending our school. No experience is necessary. This is our second year as a club at the school. In our club and team meetings we will discuss the following:
1. Basic rules and object of the game.
2. Proper Chess Etiquette and Good Sportsmanship.
3. Piece names and their respective movement.
4. Opening moves and deployment of pieces.
5. Game notation.
6. Offensive and defensive strategies (Tactics).
7. Chess clock operations.
Club/Team members will have the opportunity to participate in several "Mini-Tournaments" which will be held throughout the year. A school-wide tournament is scheduled to start in late March or early April and conclude before spring break. The school-wide tournament is open to all of our students even if they are not members of the club/team, provided they participate in at least two of our mini tournaments held between September and February. An adult tournament can also be arranged, if needed. Our CHESS TEAM will be in competition against other schools for the first time during the 2008/2009 school year. Look for more details in September. A schedule of club meetings and competition dates will be posted early fall. If school is "closed" or if school "closes early" due to the weather or any other emergency, the club/team will not meet and students should head home on their respective busses, be picked up by their parents, or head directly home if they are "walkers."
