Alice in Wonderland

By: Emily Sugrue

This year’s school production is going to be a great one! I write this as I sit in the back of our auditorium, watching a rehearsal. “Alice in Wonderland”, the play, absolutely comes alive before me. The energy coming from the cast, our peers, is so evident. Even though it’s early in the rehearsals, this musical is already coming together.

Spear-headed by Ms. Connors, Ms. Damelio, Mrs. Pivko, and Mr. Arnolds, our school production is full of talent. First of all, the coordinators listed above are amazingly dedicated and good at what they do. They also chose the cast, consisting of the leads and two chorus groups.

One of the things I instantly notice about the making of the play is how involved the students are in decisions. They are allowed to give their opinions and ideas, and the teachers listen and consider them. This shows that the cast are truly enjoying themselves, because it’s their play.

So c’mon, EMS, and support the drama club! Don’t miss Liz Rosa, Anna Hoferer, and Sarah Derrick as Alice, in “Alice in Wonderland.” Tickets for this April 3rd and 4th show will be sold closer to the performance date.

Builder's Club

By: Tim Burns

The Builder’s Club, run by Mrs. Winnetz and Mrs. Kranik, was created for one purpose: to help others.  The Builder’s Club stemmed off from the Key Club in the high school, which stemmed off from Kiwanis International, which is made up of adults.  Eventually, two years ago, Lincoln/Roosevelt got K-Kids, the youngest level so far.
The Builder’s Club is known for participating in fun projects, which end up helping others.  There have recently been such fun events as the Hunger Walk, which the Student Council also did, and the “Everything but the Turkey Drive”, where kids brought in Thanksgiving Foods, sorted them out, and sent them away.  The most recent project was making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for a soup kitchen.  Most people associate helping others with hard, boring work, but Builder’s Club will make you think otherwise.

Social Life at EMS

By: Emily Sugrue

The place to be is constantly changing. With so many great places to hang out in Roxbury, it’s hard to choose just one. But it seems like every group of friends seems to have their own spot. And whether it’s hitting the movies or skateboarding, EMS has a huge social life!

In sports seasons, lots of people can be found at home games. Basketball, field hockey, football, and wrestling are especially popular. Being at the games with your friends gives you a chance to hang out while also supporting Roxbury. The RHS football games have also become increasingly popular with our grades. Sports events are obviously a huge part of EMS’s social life!

Another huge part of our lives are the school sponsored events- like dances. Both dances this year have been big hits, with lots of us attending. It was finally at time where we were in school, but not doing work! It was a chance to dance, talk, and laugh with your friends while listening to great music and having a blast!

EMS also uses the surrounding places to our advantage. Movie theaters, malls, restaurants, etc. are constantly within reach. These sorts of things are usually done in groups, with lots of friends involved. What’s not to love about exciting places close to home?

Overall, our school loves going places with other people and having a good time. Our teachers will probably agree (due to all of the talking), that we are a very social school. We use sports, dances, and surrounding places as a fun chance to be with friends. EMS has such a variety of interesting things to do and see!

Advice Column

Dear Julie,
Well I’m having this problem at school. There’s this girl and she is such a bully. Not just to me, but to other people. One day she’s being a jerk, and the next minute she thinks I’m her friend. How can I tell her I don’t want to be friends with her? Or should I give her another chance? Please help
                                        BFF or enemy
Dear BFF or enemy,
Well it seems that this “girl” is giving you a real problem. A friend is not just someone you are with, it’s someone you can trust, keep secrets with, and most of all, have fun with them. If you can’t have that special bond with her, than I wouldn’t even waste your time.
