Mr. Christopher S. Deery
Principal
Dear Parents and Guardians, February 1, 2012
You may be interested to know… New Jersey recently passed legislation that allows individual school districts to change the time of school elections to November (when there would likely be a larger turnout). Included in this legislation is the provision that as long as the school budget stays within the maximum 2% increase over the prior year, it is subject to the approval of the elected members of the Board of Education and does not require a majority vote by the general voting population. This process would mirror the representative process by which the voice of the electorate is reflected in the votes of elected officials, as is the case with municipal, state, and federal budgets. This matter will be voted upon at the next meeting of the Roxbury Board of Education on Monday, February 6, at 7:30 in the Lincoln-Roosevelt Auditorium. As with all issues, there are well-intended arguments to support different viewpoints, and the voices of our families matter. Please join me in attending this important meeting to learn of how this issue impacts you and our school district, as well as to have the opportunity to have your voice heard.
This Thursday, February 2 is not only Groundhog Day; it is also the annual Franklin School Square Dance Night. The fun begins at 7:00 PM. I have heard a great deal about this event, and I can’t wait to see the students strut their stuff in the gym.
The next PTA meeting will be held on Wednesday, February 15 at 7:30 PM. This change in days allows everyone to spend Tuesday with their sweetheart for Valentine Day (Dads, don’t forget to order the flowers early!).
There will be no school for students on Friday, February 17, or on Monday, February 20. Because the district has already used two emergency days, Tuesday, February 21, and Wednesday, February 22, school is in session. Staff will be attending workshops for Professional Development on Friday, February 17.
February is the start of the second half of this school year. The second marking period just recently ended on January 27, and the third marking period is underway. Parents should be able to view report cards in Genesis on Monday, February 13. As we begin the second half of the year I would like to take a moment to say thank you for working with your children at home. It is my pleasure to see them each day! I look forward to the second half of this school year.
Sincerely,
Mr. Christopher S. Deery
