Food Allergies
Food allergies are an immune response to food, which the body perceives as harmful. Food allergies have the potential to cause a fatal reaction. There are food allergies and intolerances. Different responses in food allergies cause the body to release a host of chemicals including histamine, which cause various ailments and as such involve different organ systems. At the present time there are no cures for food allergies, only avoidance. The most common food allergies are peanuts, tree nuts, milk, soy, wheat, fish, and shellfish. Some children do outgrow allergies, but many do not. The reason for the increase in food allergies has not been identified, however many theories are being explored. The most common allergy in elementary school age children is peanuts, and we are experiencing an increase in children with this allergy. It is not recommended that a school create a “peanut free” environment, since it creates a false sense of security, and could be harmful in the long run. The food allergy & asthma network is the most comprehensive web site available for understanding and responding to food allergies. Their recommendations and suggestions are in place in our schools.
