WHY? HOW? WHERE?

Welcome back to a wonderful new school year. We are continuing to make new and exciting changes to our cafeterias as we met the challenge of implementing the wellness policy guidelines while meeting the taste preferences of our students.

We've added more fresh fruits and vegetables to the lunch lines at all of our schools, cut up celery, carrots, cucumbers, broccoli, cauliflower, eggplant, watermelon, grapes, sliced apples, oranges and pineapples to name a few.  These choices add color, refreshment and crunch to your lunch.  At Roxbury High School, we've added more fresh made garden and fruit & cheese salads, a tomato surprise with tuna, egg salad, cottage cheese, fruit & yogurt salad, Humus with vegetables and pita chip. Our 100% juice slushy machine is still very popular.  Two new lunch items on the RHS October menu are Philly Steak & Cheese Wrap with Cheddar Horseradish sauce and Chicken Cordon Bleu on a Kaiser Roll.  These menu items will be repeated throughout the school year.  At Eisenhower Middle School, the students are also enjoying fresh fruit and salad platters.  Look for our new 100% fruit juice Slushy machine.  The elementary students are enjoying the variety of vegetables, fresh fruit and fruit juices on the lunch line.  Look for more whole grains on our menu. We now have pizza made with whole wheat, whole wheat breads, bagels, crackers and rolls. We also are serving more vegetarian selections as our main menu item. Look for our pasta bar and lo mien on the 06-07 menus at RHS and our version of lunchables at the elementary schools** .... Check out the 06-07 menus for a "beary "healthy lunch.  In December we introduced Bag Mania, a new twist on bag lunches.  This new item debuted to rave reviews from the students.  The February menu at Roxbury High School boasts two special menu items for super bowl and mardi gras.

DID YOU KNOW ????? Our Elementary and Middle school kitchens do not have fryers.  Your K-8 child's nuggets, burgers and fries are all specially formulated to be baked to crispness in our ovens. We bake all of our entreé items. At the Roxbury High School kitchen, the only item we fry is french fries. All entreé items are baked, and our burgers are flame broiled on an open grill. And we continue to be trans fat free. Even our fryer fries are trans-fat free!  We use a blend of canola oil that delivers no trans-fat in the frying process. Our snack offerings are also trans-fat free. You can be assured that we do our best to choose healthy offerings for our menus and ala carte items! We're working hard to bring new and exciting menu items to the cafeterias .... stop in and enjoy one.

** Lunch Munchers made their debut in our elementary cafeterias on March 15 .. to rave reviews...the excitement about our new menu offering built over the last few weeks and it was well worth the wait ... the students thoroughly enjoyed this meal, with many new customers venturing into the cafeterias Lunch Munchers were such a huge hit, the students were requesting a repeat performance ... look for them again on our menus.  Lunch Munchers .. keeping Fun at lunch !!

For Good Taste and Health, Follow the Rainbow

Looking for ways to help you and your family eat more fruits and vegetables for good health? Here’s an idea: Eat the colors of the rainbow.

Research increasingly shows that foods with color and rich flavor contain more phytochemicals – plant compounds that aid in disease prevention and health maintenance. When planning your meals, think about the color spectrum:

Red foods like tomatoes, watermelon, guava and pink grapefruit contain lycopene, which may aid in the prevention of cancer and reduce your risk for heart disease.
Yellow-orange fruit and vegetables like apricots, pumpkin, cantaloupe, sweet potatoes, winter squash, carrots and oranges contain beta-carotene, which may aid in the prevention of cancer, slow the aging process, improve lung function and reduce problems related to type 2 diabetes.
Green foods like broccoli, kale, spinach, collard greens, Romaine lettuce and Brussels sprouts contain lutein and zeaxthanin, which contributes to healthy vision and may aid in the prevention of cancer.
Blue foods like blueberries, plums and currants are rich in vitamin C, which helps keep your capillaries strong so you won’t bruise easily.
White foods like onions, garlic, scallions and leeks can help lower LDL (or bad) cholesterol, reduce the risk of certain cancers and help control hypertension.

The Dietary Guidelines for Americans encourage people to eat 2 cups of fruit and 2½ cups of vegetables every day  And, don’t forget to be active every day. Be sure to fit physical activity into your daily routine along with good food choices for a healthy life.
