Dear Parents Guardians of Roxbury Township Middle & High School Students:
The Roxbury Township School District Board of Education will be adopting several policies in compliance with state requirements.* The Board is committed to these policy changes that will effect foods sold, served or given out as free promotions during the school day. (The beginning of the first period of the first instruction period until 20 minutes after the dismissal time.) The Board believes that children need access to healthful foods and opportunities to be physically active in order to grow, learn and thrive and that good health supports student attendance and the ability to learn. The changes that will impact the cafeterias and classrooms are as follows: These items will not be sold, served or given out as free promotions during the school day: · All forms of candy · All foods & beverages listing sugar, in any form, as the first ingredient. · Foods of minimal nutritional value as defined by the USDA, ex. Soda, water ices, gum All meals served in the cafeterias shall meet the Federal nutrition standards as required by the USDA Child Nutrition Program. · Snacks and beverages sold shall contain no more than 8 grams of total fat, no more than 2 grams saturated fat, and no more than .5 grams of trans fats. · Beverages limited to; 100% juice, milk, water. · Whole milk will be served in 8 oz containers only
In the Classrooms and Schools:
Foods to support the curriculum: food and beverages provided should comply with the dietary standards listed above. These foods must be purchased from an approved vendor (please call Director of Food & Nutrition Services for list or check the website www.roxbury.org/foodservices ) or purchased from our cafeteria. No homemade foods items are permitted. Special School Events School wide celebrations Student birthdays: It is recommended that food and beverages provided by parents to be shared with classmates comply with the dietary standards listed above. These foods must be purchased from an approved vendor (please call Director of Food & Nutrition Services for list or visit www.roxbury.org/foodservices) or purchased from our cafeteria. No homemade foods items are permitted. No Exceptions
Food related Fund Raisers: Must be approved by the building principal and food sale cannot be conducted during the school day.
Sports, Team and school related activities: If you use the cafeteria at all, must have a food service employee on the premises •Cannot store any outside foods in our refrigerators , NO EXCEPTIONS.
•Food can only be purchased from the cafeteria or an approved vendor (requirements) •No homemade foods or foods from home will be permitted .. i.e. pasta sauces , chili burgers etc.
It is recommended that school related activities adhere to the nutrition standards above to encourage a healthful lifestyle. Exemptions to the above are outlined in the policy.
The Board is committed to promoting these food standards in compliance with federal and state requirements* to reinforce healthy eating habits by our students both in school and in school-related activities as well as in their daily lives. Please visit our website www.roxbury.org food services link for suggestions and recommendations of food items that meet the above criteria.
