Students in Mrs. Michelle
Connelly’s Language Arts class at Eisenhower Middle School recently completed
a book-making project in conjunction with their unit of study on Communications.
The
students studied theories of how language was developed, the history of language
and how people acquire language, as a small child.
They also examined various children's books and discussed which
characteristics held a small child's interest and attention.
The characteristics, which the students and Mrs. Connelly identified,
were: pictures/color, request for interaction, textures and repetition of words
or phrases.
Using
this list of characteristics, Mrs. Connelly’s students had to create a
children's book using at least one of the above.
The requirement for this book-making project was that the book had to
teach something to any age group ranging from 6 months to 4 years old.
According
to Mrs. Connelly, “The students chose a variety of topics, such as feelings,
alphabet letters, colors, shapes, numbers, foods and manners, just to name a
few! Some of the books were
displayed at the Rockaway Mall for the Pride in Public Education display.”
