CAREER PLANNING
AT LINCOLN/ROOSEVELT
At Lincoln/Roosevelt School, the guidance counselors and computer cycle teacher have worked together with sixth graders using “The Career Game-Explorer.”
In this program, guidance counselors - Mrs. Roxie Benbow and Mrs. Gina LaCapra, worked with students to find clues for a future career that would fit their personalities and interests. In this process, the students have been learning to understand themselves, by writing down thoughts and feelings in a corresponding booklet.
Once the guidance counselors finished working with the students, the students worked with their Computer Cycle teacher, Mrs. Terry Negin to input data from their booklets into the “Career” Program. The program then highlighted careers that reflected each student’s individual interests. This allowed the students to explore a variety of careers, as well as develop their workplace readiness skills.
The students also used the Internet to go to the “U.S. Department of Labor” for further research. They compared working conditions, job growth, earnings and other areas of concern for each job. The students also created a spreadsheet where they presented their findings and conducted a comparative analysis of their data in Microsoft Word.
The students have taken home their resulting projects and have been asked to see if their interests change during their future school careers. Mrs. Negin states, “It is our hope that this infusion of technology into career planning will help students plan their future and discover what makes them special.”
