GREENHOUSE AT EISENHOWER MIDDLE SCHOOL COMPLETED

The Eisenhower Middle School greenhouse has been completed.  Ms. Meg Fagan and Ms. Lynne Kranik, both seventh grade teachers at EMS, conceived the idea for this project.  It was through funding from the Roxbury Foundation for Educational Excellence and Roxbury Parents for Exceptional Children, as well as a donation from the Eisenhower Middle School PTA that this project could be carried out.

According to Ms. Fagan, “Our goal with this project was to give the 7th grade life science students an opportunity to explore plant life more closely.”

Now that the greenhouse has been established, the next phase of the project will begin in March.  At this time, the students will start a variety of annuals and perennials in the greenhouse.  Some of the plants will be used for sales while others will be used for gardens in the EMS courtyard.  The students will have an opportunity to learn marketing techniques, garden design, plant care, functional math, and a host of other skills.

Both, Ms. Fagan and Ms. Kranik would like to extend their warmest thanks to their sponsors as well as to Steve Zawistowski who donated much of his time to assist them in constructing the greenhouse.   They would also like to thank John McMahon and Jeff Gottsleben, of the Roxbury School District’s Buildings and Grounds staff, as well as the custodial staff members at EMS for assisting with the project.
