On February 25, 2004, the Second Grade students of Kennedy School sponsored a black history program entitled, “Kids for Kids: Appreciating Diversity.” This program aligned with the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards and it support the Kennedy School character education curriculum by providing lessons encompassing the history and accomplishments of African Americans in our country. Through a variety of spirituals, the students of Kennedy School had their historical perspective enhanced. They also gained an appreciation for diversity of music. Following the presentation, the students extended what they had learned by writing reflections about the experience in their journals and by writing formal entries for their portfolios.
