A Holiday Citizenship Project For the Franklin School Children

During the month of December, the families and students at Franklin School donated hats, mittens, and scarves for needy children.

“The holiday season is a good time of year to teach children about citizenship and caring.  For that reason, Mrs. Carol Pellet, school counselor at Franklin School, organized a Holiday Citizen Project,” stated Mrs. Mary Ann Boyd – Principal of Franklin School.

The mittens were used to decorate a holiday tree in the foyer by the gym and the scarves and hats were displayed around the tree.  On December 22nd, the items were delivered to the Red Cross and Roxbury Social Services for distribution.

Mrs. Body commented, “As members of their community, students benefit from seeing that they can make a difference in helping others who may be less fortunate than they are.”

Parents were encouraged to have students contribute to the purchase of the items to be donated by using their allowance, doing extra chores to earn money, or giving up a special treat to purchase the item, such as a movie rental.  In that way, the children were able to understand that helping others means giving of one’s self.

“One thing was clear when the project was completed - Franklin School students and their families are very caring and very generous!” stated Mrs. Boyd.
