Fifth graders from Lincoln/Roosevelt School in Roxbury Township had the opportunity to spend a day at the Gateway National Recreation Area in Sandy Hook, New Jersey on May 13, 2004 with their enrichment teacher, Mrs. Jeanne Maurella, Mrs. Pat Bihon – Humanities and Enrichment Supervisor and five parent volunteers.
Sixteen top science students and fourteen winners in an Earth Day Contest were rewarded with this hands-on environmental marine experience. Each of the students handled and learned about horseshoe crabs and many other invertebrate, which are taken from our coastal waters.
Labs, which all of the students benefited from, included: weather recording, usage of weather instruments, examining New Jersey seashells, as well as, discussing and exploring solar energy and non-point source pollution.
The students also had the opportunity to experience 12 workshops. Some of which included: clamming, seining, identifying marine animals, conducting a salt marsh scavenger hunt and recognizing birds of the Jersey shore. Each of the labs and workshops, which the students enjoyed, complimented the New Jersey Core Curriculum Science Standards.
