In the spring of 2004, a committee, comprised of Roxbury School District parents, administrators, teachers and students developed Codes of Conduct for Lincoln/Roosevelt School, Eisenhower Middle School and Roxbury High School. The documents they created are to be used with all students involved in co-curricular activities at the above-mentioned schools.
A Roxbury Code of Conduct contract is a commitment by the student to exercise good judgment in all affairs, to represent self, school, family and community in the most positive manner at all times, and to encourage others to share these ideals.
Students engaged in interscholastic athletics or student activities are considered as leaders and, as such, are expected to represent themselves in that fashion. Participation in co-curricular activities is an avenue for the teaching and practicing of good citizenship, for promoting the growth of good character, and for the development of other important life skills.
In light of this, each Code of Conduct highlights a student’s responsibility to comply with all Board of Education Policies and Regulations, all school rules, and the rules established by various governing organizations (for example: NJSIAA, Iron Hills Conference, etc.) The codes also outline consequences for students who are found to be in violation of the deportment standards delineated in the documents.
The expectation, as communicated in the Codes of Conduct, is for all activity students and student athletes to adhere to the guidelines of proper sportsmanship/behavior and to show proper respect for their teammates, fellow activity participants, opposing players, coaches, advisors, parents, judges and officials at all times. Disqualification from an activity/event as a result of poor sportsmanship or as a result of an official’s ruling is deemed unacceptable and will result in team/club discipline, including disqualification from ensuing competitions. Roxbury High School sanctions will be added to those of the NJSIAA in the case of athletic disqualification.
The Codes of Conduct clearly state that hazing, bullying and sexual harassment are strictly prohibited. Any action taken or situation intentionally created to produce mental or physical discomfort, embarrassment, harassment, or ridicule as a condition of joining a team, student organization or other group will be considered as unacceptable. As a result, such actions will be dealt with in the most serious of fashions.
As of this September, the Roxbury Codes of Conduct are in place and being used at the three schools. Ms. Andrea Saladino and Ms. Alexis Korsak, Assistant Principals at Roxbury High School, have conducted orientations for Student Activity Advisors’ and coaches, where they reviewed and disseminated the codes, as well as highlighted the responsibilities of those overseeing the various activities at Roxbury High School.
