First Graders in Franklin School just completed their annual Definition
Derby contest, which focuses on the many science themes that the First Graders
learn during their school year.
For the Derby, the first grade teachers formulate questions reflective
of four of the science themes - Night,
Plants, Weather and the Animals. Each
first grade class is divided into five teams.
These teams work cooperatively to prepare for the Derby Preliminaries.
At the Preliminaries, the five teams compete against each other. There are a total of six rounds and each team is provided with questions to answer. If the team answers the questions correctly, their respective horse icon moves forward on the Derby board. The winner of the Preliminaries goes to the finals to compete against the winning teams from the other first grades.
This year the finals were held on Thursday, May 19, 2005. This year’s winning team was from Mrs. Silvestri's class. Mrs. Silvestri’s class now gets to keep the Derby trophy in their classroom for the rest of the year.
