On Thursday, January 13, 2005, several Roxbury students participated in the first competition of the New Jersey Science League. All over the State, students participated in the academic competition in the fields of biology, chemistry, physics and earth science.
The Science League consists of four competitions held the second Thursday of each month from January through April. Students participate by invitation only. Teachers choose those students who not only excel in science, but who are also eager to compete with the other top students all over the State.
Each school is assigned a particular testing site. Scores are sent into a central location and within two weeks the results are posted. Students have an opportunity to receive a plaque, as well as scholarship money at the conclusion of all four competitions.
“While awards are wonderful and Roxbury has received quite a few over the years, the fact that so many students want to participate is the real reward,” states Julie Bohrer, Science League advisor. So many schools have difficulty getting students to participate in an after school academic program. “We should be proud of our exceptional students in Roxbury.”
