Help is on the way! Kennedy Elementary School students have been counting their pennies in order to help raise funds for those affected by Hurricane Katrina.
As of Friday, September 24, 2005, over 14,785 coins have been collected for the fundraising effort totaling $1078.07 for “Coins for Katrina”. This relief effort was advertised with a poem written by second grade teachers, Mrs. Karen Fasino and Mrs. Nancy Sekella.
Hurricane Katrina was her name.
The Gulf Coast region will never be the same.
In came the water, wind and rain,
& caused those people so much pain.
Here is something simple we can do,
Uniting together, me & you.
Won’t you please come & join,
By donating just a helpful coin?
To the Red Cross we will send,
& help bring their suffering to an end.
The children of Kennedy Elementary School learned more than a regular math lesson in calculating coins. Mrs. Fasino knew the students had learned a lesson in giving when she read notes from the children stating that their donation came from their personal savings.
“The children were so excited to see how just a few coins from each child could total so much money. They were amazed to learn that our Kennedy School families were able to collect over 14,000 coins,” said Mrs. Fasino.
“Coins for Katrina” is one of many fundraising efforts the Roxbury School District is hosting. For more information regarding district and community fundraising efforts please visit www.roxbury.org.
