ELEMENTARY SCHOOL RECYCLING CLUB BEGINS AT JEFFERSON SCHOOL

Three students in Mrs. Joan Damell’s fourth grade class at the Jefferson Elementary School are out to “Save the Earth.”

Mrs. Damell is incredibly proud of the determination of her students, "These three students have been so motivational initiating a Recycling Club at our school.  The number of students who have signed up to be members has far exceeded their goals.  In all my years of teaching about Earth Day, no one has ever taken as much interest as these three role models and I am very proud of them.  Look for their names as future leaders in Roxbury:  Victoria Guerriero, Tia Mitchell, and Juliana Mishkin."

The three students approached Principal Mrs. Karen Carlson with ideas on how to help the school recycle.  With the support of their Principal, they embarked on a new adventure, one that will help the community and the environment.  The Recycling Club began with three ambitious youths and has grown to approximately 90 students.  When asked about the inspiration behind this club, Mrs. Carlson said, “When I was approached by these three young ladies, it was clear that I was looking into the faces of the future.  They are motivated, determined, and they care deeply about making a positive difference in the world.  The fact is… they can make a difference.  Anything that we, as adults, can say or do to support them and their sense of efficacy is an investment in the future."

On June 21, 2006, the Jefferson School Recycling Club will roll up their sleeves and begin to clean the grounds outside of their school.
