NEW TEACHER’S LEARN ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS OF TEACHING

New teachers in the Roxbury School district are benefiting from continued training with a new teacher orientation model.

Under the supervision of Assistant Superintendent Mr. Ed Hade, the Curriculum Supervisors, Mrs. Patricia Bihon, Mrs. Lily Chang, Mrs. Jane Feret, Mrs. Eva Gale, and Mrs. Danielle Lynch,   developed a training model that is being recognized countywide.  The district supervisors presented their orientation model in October to the Morris County Curriculum Network.

Traditionally, new teachers participated in a one-day workshop prior to the student’s arrival and were assigned a mentor for their first year.  They were also offered an opportunity to attend a series of after-school workshops.  This year, a two-day workshop kicked off the new model of teacher training.  Throughout the school year, four additional full day sessions of training are being added to provide new teachers the support they need in transitioning to the Roxbury School District or to being a new teacher.  As in the past, first year teachers are assigned to a mentor; however, this year the mentees and mentors are guided by a new series of requirements as prescribed by the State of New Jersey and implemented by the Roxbury Local Professional Development Committee.

Workshops have been developed to promote professional growth and development in keeping with the district’s mission.  New staff members have commented that the training they are receiving is purposeful and well organized.  One teacher commented, “It was incredibly helpful to meet with other new teachers before beginning on the first day.  I think that the modeled activities and professionalism are also very important to us as new teachers.  I believe I'll use the handbook and the personal mentoring and planning guide.”

The Roxbury School district is committed to providing quality training and professional development to all new faculty members.
