ROXBURY HIGH SCHOOL HONORS WIND SYMPHONY TO REPRESENT NJ ON THE NATIONAL STAGE
The Roxbury High School Instrumental Music Department is proud to announce that the Roxbury HS Honors Wind Symphony has recently been selected to perform in the 2008 Bands of America National Concert Band Festival. Selected as one of only 16 bands in the country, this is one of the highest achievements a high school band can receive. This is the first national invitation for the Roxbury Instrumental Music Department and only the second time a band from NJ has been invited to perform.
The application process for the National Concert Band Festival is of the highest standards. Roxbury submitted a full-length recording of two selections along with a detailed packet of information outlining the specifics of their concert band program such as enrollment, structure, and accomplishments. In addition, references were furnished of prominent collegiate professors and post secondary professionals that have worked with the band in the past. The recording and materials were adjudicated and evaluated by three of the most highly acclaimed artists and educators in the country, Eugene Corporan, Regents Professor of Music and Director of Bands University of North Texas, Dr. Anthony Maiello, Director of Bands George Mason University, and Dr. Larry Gookin, Director of Bands, University of Washington. Bands are evaluated based on the performance level of the recorded material and the merit of their credentials.
Since its
debut in 1992, the Bands of America National Concert Band Festival has been
acknowledged as one of the premier educational events for America's high school
concert bands. The Festival's mission is to focus a national spotlight on the
core of our nation's band programs, the concert band. The Festivals are
celebrations of musical excellence; non-competitive events that combine
world-class performance and evaluation opportunities with an exhilarating
atmosphere of camaraderie in music.
The non-competitive
atmosphere provides a place for growth, cooperative encouragement and mutual
respect among band programs, students, parents, boosters and administrators.
Directors select their own programs helping to encourage their ensembles to
reach for new heights, while striving for innovation, growth and excellence.
Participating students experience an atmosphere of mutual respect for their
peers while enjoying concerts from other outstanding ensembles. Participation is
a "credential" worth having.
The Roxbury High School Honors Wind Symphony will travel to Indianapolis, Indiana in late February to perform a one hour concert at Clowes Memorial Hall, on the campus of Butler University, performing for over 3,000 people. Students will also receive a master class from members of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra and a private 45 minute clinic with an internationally renowned conductor.
The Instrumental Music Department is proud to be representing Roxbury and the State of New Jersey in this most prestigious event. This is a very proud day for our music department and entire community.
