RHS TEACHER – A MODEL OF EXCELLENCE

Mrs. Jane Hopper, Roxbury High School English teacher and newspaper adviser, has been recognized by the Columbia Scholastic Press Association (CSPA) for being “a model of excellence as a teacher, publication adviser and speaker.”

Edmund Sullivan, director of the association, states, “That’s the only conclusion I can draw from the positive performance of your publication ROXBURY REVIEW in our national critique and awards programs.”  The Roxbury Review, Roxbury High School’s student newspaper, was designated as a Gold Medallist in the CSPA’s annual critique of student publications.

As a result of the standard of excellence that Mrs. Hopper has displayed, the association has invited her to speak at its upcoming 80th Annual Convention at Columbia University. Mrs. Hopper will make a presentation on a topic related to teaching journalism and advising the Roxbury Review, the high school’s student newspaper.

“It’s an honor to be invited to share the tools and techniques that have helped the Review staff achieve a high standard of journalism at a convention that I myself attended when I was a high school journalist,” states Mrs. Hopper.

The convention will be held from Wednesday, March 17, through Friday, March 19, 2004.  Last year, over 3,300 students and advisers from 400 public and private middle and senior high schools from 37 states and the District of Columbia attended this event.

Mrs. Eva Gale, Supervisor of Humanities – Grades 6-12, states, “Indeed, only a third year teacher, Mrs. Jane Hopper has been honored by the request to speak at the 80th Annual Convention at Columbia University, an honor bestowed upon her for excellence in journalistic leadership.  Her professionalism and work ethic is a model for her students and fuels their enthusiasm and performance.”
