Adorned in their Pi t-shirts, students from Mrs. Judy Isler’s Roxbury High School math class attended class on March 12, 2004 and enjoyed a variety of Pi Day activities. Pi Day traditionally falls on March 14 (3/14); however, since the fourteenth fell on a Sunday, the students dedicated the 12th to their Pi Day celebration.
In honor of Pi Day, the students
designed t-shirts involving Pi. They were able to use the symbol Pi, the
definition of Pi and the value of Pi in their designs.
Mrs. Isler, Joann Hughes, Mary Muller, Ronnie Spitz, and April Solotist,
Jeff Cemelli, Bobi Huynh and Bes Strohmeyer – all staff at Roxbury High
School, judged the student’s t-shirts for creativity in the use of Pi.
Grand prize for t-shirt
design was awarded to Janelle Oates, a junior at RHS.
Janelle along with the first place winner in each class received a Pi
t-shirt that was donated by Givency, a company that manufactures a perfume
entitled, Pi.
Mrs. Isler created
a variety of activities to commemorate this day.
Some of the activities included the creation of a Pi paper chain with
different colored paper representing each number, a Pi mobile and a Pi bracelet
with beads that represented the first 30 digits of Pi.
The students also
solved a host of problems involving Pi. There was also a contest where
students had to list, as many things that they could think of that are circular
in shape. The student from each
class that could think of the most things received a coupon for an individual
pizza Pi from Pizza Hut. Other
community support for this Pi Day celebration came from Buddy's Ice Cream, which
donated ice cream pi sandwiches and the Roxbury Market Place, which donated a
variety of pies(pi).
“All in all, the day was a great learning experience mixed with a lot of fun,” stated Mrs. Isler.
