Students from Lincoln/Roosevelt School recently competed in the Reader’s Digest National Word Power Challenge. The contest was a vocabulary-based contest designed for schools nationwide. Students from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the United States Virgin Islands, and home-schooled students were eligible for this event.
The preliminary round was held in each individual classroom. Classroom winners then advanced to the school’s second round. The winners of this round moved onto the final championship round.
The grade level winners for this year’s competition were: Kerrin Garripoli (sixth grade), Jared Percevault (fifth grade), and Brittany Saul (fourth grade). Grade level winners have taken the state grade level test and are awaiting notification of results. If they are among the one hundred top scoring students in the state, they will get to go to the state level competition. State champions receive an all expenses-paid trip to Colonial Williamsburg and a shot at $50,000 in scholarship awards. Last year, Alexa Cain represented the school at the state level competition.
