Three Roxbury High School students, Julie
Linden, Valerie Papanikalow and Dana Harrington, have had the distinct privilege of
attending The
Governor’s School of New Jersey. The
Governor’s School of New Jersey is a unique summer program committed to
meeting the educational needs of artistically or academically talented high
school students who have completed their junior year.
This
year approximately 100 scholars were accepted into each of the six Governor’s
Schools. Roxbury High School’s
Julie Linden attended The Governor’s School on the Environment and attending
The Governor’s School of the Arts were Valerie Papanikalow for Voice and Dana
Harrington for Dance.
Within
the six Governor’s Schools, emphasis is placed on problem solving of complex
issues that exist on a local, state, national, and international level,
leadership training, and creative expression though the medium of fine and
performing arts. The Governor’s School is an intensive four-week residential
learning experience held on four college campuses throughout the state.
Governor
Tom Kean chartered the Governor’s School in 1983. The first school, School of
Public Issues-Monmouth University, began with one hundred thirteen students. In
1984, two additional programs were added, School of the Sciences-Drew
University, and School of the Arts-The College of New Jersey. Each program
accepted one hundred students. In 1989, School on the Environment, The Richard
Stockton College of New Jersey, was added with an additional one hundred
students. The Governor’s School on International Studies at Ramapo College of
New Jersey began in July 2000 and the School of Engineering and Technology
housed on the Busch Campus of Rutgers University was established in July 2001.
Since its inception in 1983, the program has served 6,500 students. There are typically 2,400 applications and the program serves approximately 625 students each year. The Roxbury School District is extremely proud of these three students and their tremendous accomplishment in attending The Governor’s School of New Jersey.
