AWARD WINNERS OF THE VFW AND LADIES AUXILIARY CONTESTS

 

On March 6, 2005, winners of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of The United States of America and the Ladies Auxiliary 2004-2005 competitions were recognized at the local level by VFW Post #2833 and its Ladies Auxiliary.

Patriot's Pen, a youth-essay writing contest endorsed by the National Association of Secondary School Principals', is a nationwide competition that gives students in grades 6,7 and 8 the opportunity to write essays expressing their views on democracy. Annually, more than 115,000 students participate in the annual contest. Contestants write a 300-400 word essay based on an annual patriotic theme.

Receiving Honorable Mention in the Patriot’s Pen Essay contest were Eisenhower Middle School students, Patrick Ziemer, Christopher Rozik and Alexis Esposito.  Jeffery Koroski, an Eisenhower Middle School student, received an honorable mention in the local competition and placed first in the District 10 Patriot’s Pen Essay competition. Receiving second place in the local Patriot’s Pen contest was Eisenhower Middle School student, Kenny Grossman. 

The Voice of Democracy, endorsed by the National Association of Secondary School Principals', is an audio essay contest for high school students in grades 9-12. The annual contest, which is designed to foster patriotism, allows students the opportunity to voice their opinion in a three to five minute essay based on an annual theme.

This year, James Marconi, received first place for the fourth consecutive year in this contest.  Additionally, James placed first in the District 10 competition and third in the State Competition.  Additionally, Kelly Herzog, a sophomore in Roxbury High School, placed third in the local competition. 

The VFW's National Citizenship Education Teachers' Award recognizes the nation's top elementary, junior high and high school teachers who teach citizenship education topics regularly and promote America's history and traditions.

This year Mr. Bill Buro, Lincoln/Roosevelt School teacher, has been recognized with the VFW’s National Citizenship Education Teachers’ Award for Grades K-5.  He also placed second in this competition at the District 10 level. 

Mrs. Elizabeth Snyder, Eisenhower Middle School teacher, has been recognized with the VFW’s National Citizenship Education Teachers’ Award for Grades 6-8.  She also placed first in this competition at the District 10 level.

At the Board of Education’s April 4, 2005 meeting, these students and teachers were recognized for their accomplishments.  Additionally, VFW Post #2833 and Ladies Auxiliary members were recognized for their efforts in coordinating the recent Veterans of Foreign Wars and Ladies Auxiliary contests.
