MAKE POVERTY HISTORY

During February 2005, Brittany Smith, a Roxbury High School senior, had the opportunity to visit Trafalgar Square in London.  While there, she had the opportunity to hear Nelson Mandela address twenty two thousand people in a movement called Make Poverty History.  Nelson Mandela is currently the president of the African National Congress (ANC) and a leader in human rights throughout the world.

Make Poverty History is one of the biggest anti-poverty movements that the world has experienced to date, with thousands of people throughout the world supporting its cause.  According to Miss Smith, “Mandela’s speech put pressure on the world’s leaders to keep their promises regarding aid and relief to poverty stricken people throughout the world.”  Brittany quoted Mandela’s speech, “I say to all those leaders: do not look the other way; do not hesitate.  Recognize that the world is hungry for action, not words.  Act with courage and vision.”

Brittany Smith is also the individual from Roxbury High School that was selected as one of two Morris County student representatives to attend the Young Women Leaders Day forum.  For more information on this accomplishment, please visit…
