The Roxbury High School journalism program has experienced another year of accomplishments. In addition to achieving a first place in statewide competition this past fall and numerous state-level writing and design awards, the Roxbury Review also received high marks in newspaper evaluation.
For the second year in a row the Review attained Gold Medallist ranking from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association (CSPA), and a first place with four marks of distinction from the National Scholastic Press Association (NSPA), placing the Review in the top ranks of student newspapers on a national level.
Several journalism students were named to NSPA’s Journalism Honor Roll. They are: Megan Alfieri, Allison Gibbons, Julie Linden, Josh Lehrer, James Marconi, and Maren Morsch. To qualify, students must have a grade-point average of 3.75 or higher and served on the newspaper a minimum of one year.
Four students were inducted into the journalism honor society, Quill & Scroll, at its April 21, 2005 induction. They are: Emily Baltz, Paul Hoferer, Maren Morsch, and Kelly Toves. This chapter of the international honorary society of student journalists was started last year. To become a member, students must attain a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher (or be in the top third of their class), and have made a significant contribution to student journalism, as determined by the adviser.
Finally, two Review reporters have received national writing awards, a first for the Review. Allison Gibbons and James Marconi each achieved an award from the Quill & Scroll/American Society of Newspaper Editors competition. Gibbons won for her article, “Cuts eliminate later buses.” She was one of 35 winners from a total of 488 entries. James Marconi won for his editorial, “New policies show lack of respect for students.” His entry was one of 24 winners from a field of 370. Their names will be published in the April/May issue of Quill & Scroll magazine. Gibbons and Marconi also now qualify to apply for one of several $500 Edward J. Nell Memorial Scholarships in Journalism.
