   Meet Your Counselor

I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself to the parents of children who just entered Kennedy School.  As the school counselor, I work with children individually, in small groups, and by teaching lessons in the classroom.

During September, I focus on meeting all the children who are new to Kennedy School.  Newcomers' Club meets three times to help children from other schools make a smooth transition to our school. In this group activity, the children learn more about our school and form friendships with others.  I will be visiting the kindergarten classes as well to explain my role as school counselor.

If I can answer any questions, please call me at (973) 584-3938.  I am available at Kennedy School on Tuesdays and Thursdays all day and Wednesdays in the morning.

Peacemakers

October marked the start of my monthly classroom lessons called Peacemakers.  Once a month I will be visiting each classroom to enhance the children’s social and emotional growth.

This year in kindergarten I will be using a variety of resources to increase the children’s knowledge and understanding of words expressing feelings.  When children can better express their feelings verbally, they can begin learning the first steps of conflict resolution skills later in the year.

In first grade, the goals will be to increase the children’s skill in identifying the emotions of others as a means of solving social skills problems.  This will lead to lessons on constructive ways the children can manage angry feelings.

At the second grade level, my lessons will focus on friendship skills.  We will be discussing the characteristics of a friend, behaviors that interfere with friendships, ways to make a friend, and how to give and receive compliments.

In third grade, many of the lessons will be designed to help the children build more supportive relationships with their peers.  The children will continue to build their friendship skills, including steps for initiating a conversation and joining a group. They will also be taught how to recognize bullying and how to safely refuse a bully and report incidents to an adult.

The lessons in fourth grade will reinforce and extend the children’s skills by focusing on dealing with teasing, understanding other’s viewpoints, standing up to peer pressure, and promoting cooperative behaviors.

Changing Families Group

This group is for children whose parents were recently separated or divorced.  The group teaches skills which help the children to cope with family changes.  More information about these groups will be sent home in November.
