Vocal Music

Roxbury Women's Ensemble is designed for incoming freshman women in order to acquaint them with the Roxbury Vocal Music Program.  The Women's Ensemble meets in two different class sections which meet each day and come together for performances.  These women have the opportunity to perform various styles of women's choral literature while learning fundamentals of vocal technique and sight reading.  Roxbury Women's Ensemble performs under the direction of Mr. Salyerds.

Roxbury Concert Choir meets daily in two balanced sections.  Co-directed by Ms. Lynch and Mr. Hachey, this intermediate level choir is made up of men grades 9-12 and women grades 10-12.  The singers perform traditional choral music of varying styles while working on vocal technique and sight reading.

Roxbury Chorale is an auditioned curricular ensemble which meets daily in one of two class sections.  Members of the Chorale gain entry to the group through the Spring placement auditions.  As the second most demanding curricular choir at Roxbury the Chorale provides singers with the opportunity to learn and perform challenging choral works.  The Chorale is directed by Mr. Hachey.

Roxbury Classic Sounds Honors is the select a cappella concert choir at Roxbury High School.  The equally balanced choir's 48 members are selected by audition in the sring of each year, with a prerequisite of one year in Women's Ensemble or Concert Choir.  Classic Sounds meets daily in one class section and performs challenging literature from traditional choral repertoire including classics, madrigals, spirituals, and contemporary choral works.  Classic Sounds performs under the direction of Ms. Lynch.

Broadway and Musical Theatre is designed for students who are presently singers wanting to pursue a performance based class in the area of Broadway Theatre.  Students will explore the art of musical theatre through performance, directing, listening, historical explorations and practical application of classroom experiences.  The curriculum will include student involvement in actual directing, blocking, staging, acting, singing, and all areas of performance of Broadway musicals.  Students who elect this class must be a member of one of the choir classes.

Basic Music Theory is a developmental course for students who are planning to further their study of music either as a primary or secondary vocation.

Advanced Placement Music Theory has a prerequisite of Basic Music Theory.  Additionally students must be recommended to take this class by the Basic Music Theory teacher.  This course is designed for the highly motivated, musically inclined student who possesses an interest in pursuing music in college.  The ultimate goal of AP Music Theory is to develop a student's ability to recognize, understand, and describe the basic materials and processes of music that are heard or presented in a score.  The achievement of this goal is promoted by integrated approaches to the student's development of: aural skills through listening exercises, sight singing skills through performance exercises, written skills through written exercises, compositional skills through creative exercises, and analytical skills through analytical exercises.  The course will integrate aspects of melody, harmony, texture, rhythm, form, musical analysis, elementary composition, history and style.  Musicianship skills such as dictation, sight singing, and keyboard harmony will be explored.
