BUSINESS AND MARKETING EDUCATION

 

        Welcome to Business….currently the most popular college major!  The Business & Marketing electives have been designed to ensure Roxbury students are well prepared to enter this highly- competitive area at the university level.  Courses are available for all levels of our student population:  all Business and Marketing courses satisfy the Practical Arts requirement.

 

ACCOUNTING I HONORS                       Grades 10, 11, 12                                         5 Credits

PREREQUISITE:  Current enrollment in an Honors level course in any discipline; maintaining an average of 85 or above in the class.

        This course is designed to provide the honors-level student with an understanding of accounting concepts, principles, and procedures.  The course covers accounting theory and practices and includes computer accounting procedures.  Students will develop an understanding of the economic activities affecting business and learn to analyze and interpret financial data.  It is strongly recommended for the highly -accelerated student who plans further study in the fields of business administration, finance, pre-law, or accounting.  A college-level text and course of study is used in Accounting 1 Honors.

 

ACCOUNTING II HONORS                     Grades 11, 12                                              5 Credits

PREREQUISITE:  Successful completion of Accounting I Honors

        This course is designed to expand on the accounting concepts developed in Accounting 1 Honors.  Topics include: partnership, corporate, cost, and departmentalized accounting.  Computer accounting projects and procedures are stressed, as well as detailed analysis and interpretation of financial statements as the “language of business”.

 

ACCOUNTING I                                      Grades 10, 11, 12                                         5 Credits

        This course stresses planning, preparing, analyzing and interpreting financial/business records.  It covers the entire accounting cycle from handling a basic business transaction to the preparation of various journals, ledgers, worksheets, and financial statements.  Experiences are provided to determine the student’s interest and aptitude in accounting as a career and/or as a foundation for further study on the college level. A computer accounting component is included in this course.

 

ACCOUNTING II                                   Grades 11, 12                                              5 Credits

PREREQUISITE:  Successful completion of Accounting I

        This course is designed to continue the accounting concepts and procedures developed in Accounting 1.  Topics covered include corporate, management, cost, and departmentalized accounting.  Computerized accounting procedures are stressed.

 

COMPUTER APPLICATIONS & KEYBOARDING                 Grades 9, 10, 11, 12                  5 Credits

     This course will improve and refine keyboarding accuracy and speed skills – indispensable tools in today’s high-tech, computer-oriented world.  Word processing applications will include proper formatting techniques for various tables, letters, memorandums, research papers, outlines, references, works cited, etc; students will also work with database and EXCEL spreadsheet assignments. Opportunities to improve organizational skills, as well as written communication and study skills, are provided throughout the school year.

                                                                   

WEB PAGE DESIGN                                                        Grades 10, 11, 12                                                 2 ½ Credits

Do you want to have a web page?  Then you are in luck…. it’s easy and lots of fun!  Web Page Design is a hands-on introduction to HTML and Web-page creation.  The student will learn to create Web pages using HTML, add hyperlinks, graphics, tables, frames, forms, design layout, and understand the role of scripting.  The course will also cover the use of Cascading Style Sheets to create dynamic text, images, and positioning to a Web page.  Students will create their own personal web page and publish it to the Web.

       

WEB MASTER INTERNSHIP            Grades 10, 11, 12                                                      2 ½ Credits

PREREQUISITE: Successful completion of Web Page Design

The personal computer has revolutionized the way people interact with one another.  Personal productivity software and the Internet are two of the most influential applications used on personal computers today.  Whether you’re creating a personal Web page or a corporate Internet site, Microsoft Front Page software gives you everything you need to create and manage that site!  FrontPage is used by businesses, professionals, web designers, and individuals to create their on-line presence….take this course and make your presence known!

       

INTRODUCTION TO MULTIMEDIA WITH      Grades 10, 11, 12                                 2 ½ Credits

MACROMEDIA FLASH

        Animation has been one of the most unique features to hit the Internet.  The Internet has evolved into an immense medium for commercial ventures, including entertainment, education, shopping, advertising, or just a unique way to express yourself.  With the advent of the commercial Internet, dynamic graphics and animation has become a vital component for enhancing web design and development.  Students will become proficient in using one of the leading presentation software programs, ‘FLASH MX’.  Students will create “eye-catching” screen show presentations with animations and will have an opportunity to create their own screen show as a final project.

 

ADVANCED MULTIMEDIA PRESENTATIONS               Grades 10, 11, 12                   2 ½ Credits

PREREQUISITE:  Intro to Multi-Media

        Multimedia presentation is a powerful and innovative way to get your message across. Students will increase their knowledge of presentation graphics by exploring and creating interactive, dynamic, web-savvy sites.  Students will learn how to create rollovers, 3D effects, and custom navigation.  This is a hands-on course where students will be engaged in creating and screening their presentations to the class.  Students can expect to work alone and/or in groups on a variety of class projects.

 

INTRODUCTION TO BUSINESS          Grades 9, 10, 11, 12                                          5 Credits

           These are exciting times for business!  Businesses are experiencing evolutionary and revolutionary change.  Introduction to Business examines the role of business in our society and prepares the student to deal with and become part of the contemporary business world.  Topics covered include: credit, careers, consumerism, banking, insurance, economic systems, social responsibility and business ethics.

 

BUSINESS MANAGEMENT/ENTREPRENEURSHIP    Grades 10, 11, 12                       2 ½ Credits

         Entrepreneurship is the backbone of America.  Each year thousands of individuals launch new business enterprises and build rewarding careers for themselves as entrepreneurs.  Learn how to start your own business, prepare a business plan, estimate your financial needs, analyze markets, study competition, advertise and set goals.  In addition, the course provides a foundation study of the American free enterprise system including legal forms of business ownership, franchising, and the stock market.

 

BUSINESS AND CONSUMER LAW          Grades 10, 11, 12                                       2 ½ Credits

        This course is designed to acquaint the students with the judicial aspects of a free society.  It aims to promote a respect for law and order and knowledge of the importance of maintaining a fair legal system.  The main area of concentration will be consumer and tort law.  Consumer law will deal with situations ranging from common law, to government regulation of consumer practices.  Tort law will cover cases in which a person has been injured or caused harm to others or their property.

 

INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS STUDIES          Grades 10, 11, 12                                     2 ½ Credits

        Students who intend to participate in the global marketplace must develop the skills and understanding that will allow them to be competitive.  The recognition of the need to prepare the American workforce with these skills is the foundation for this course.  Five out of ten workers in our economy are working for a foreign-owned business or international corporation.  Whether planning to study for an MBA or working as a mechanic for the Toyota Corporation, students need to have a working knowledge of business practices and cultural patterns in other nations. Students will learn about business principles in a global economy; understand role and gender differences in other cultures and the challenge created by those differences to Americans trying to conduct business in foreign nations; study the economic concepts central to the operation of an international business; and identify business operations in various regions and cultures of the world.

 

IMPROVING NOTETAKING AND LISTENING SKILLS    Grades 10, 11, 12                 2 ½ Credits

        This course is designed to develop efficient note taking and listening techniques.  It is highly recommended for college-bound students.  Students will study note taking theory and timesaving phonetic abbreviations.  In addition, they will learn to screen, analyze, and interpret lectures for key points, ideas, and concepts.

 

INTRODUCTION TO MARKETING              Grades 10, 11, 12                                        5 Credits

         Introduction to Marketing is designed to provide the student with a working knowledge of the field of marketing, which includes the areas of advertising, sales, merchandising, and management.  The student will develop into a more aware consumer while gaining the knowledge that may lead to a career in business and marketing.  Students will be permitted to join and participate in DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America) activities, which include the opportunity to compete in a variety of career areas such as advertising, sports management, marketing and more!   Students who plan to further their education after high school can continue their DECA activities by joining DECA chapters at many colleges and universities.

 

COOPERATIVE MARKETING EDUCATION         Grade12                                          15 Credits

        Marketing Co-Op offers advanced classroom instruction in the field of marketing and on-the-job experience for both career and college-bound students.  The student course grade is a combination of the related class participation and on-the-job evaluation.  Students are employed in a marketing position for the entire year.    Typical job experiences include placement at Macy’s, Fleet Bank, Sports Authority, advertising firms and small business operations.  Students must complete 540 hours of work experience to receive credit for the course, and must obtain an appropriate marketing position prior to the beginning of the school year.  Students entering the program will meet with the program coordinator prior to the end of the previous school year for orientation.  Students must also meet the credit requirement to allow for early dismissal in their coop schedule. 

           Students will be permitted to join and participate in Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA), a co-curricular club where students use their academic knowledge, as well as on-the-job experience to test their marketing skills against other DECA chapters, through Regional, State and National Competitions.  DECA provides students with an opportunity to work with business professionals, to earn scholarships, trophies and medals, and can be continued at many colleges and universities.
