FAMILY & CONSUMER SCIENCES

 

        Welcome to the wonderful world of food, fashion, fitness and child development.  The foods area of Family and Consumer Sciences provides instruction ranging from basic cooking techniques to gourmet fare, with a focus on healthy diet choices. Career opportunities in the expanding field of Food Services/Hospitality are presented.

        In child-care, observation and interaction with young children provide students with an exciting experience as they focus on the skills and decisions necessary for effective parenting and careers involving children.

        A course in Fashion Design has also been added to introduce students to the world of fashion and its many career opportunities.

        Courses in food preparation, child-care, fashion design and consumerism all contribute to our overall goal-the growth and development of a self-reliant, mature adult.

 

FOODS I                                          Grades 9, 10, 11, 12                                          5 Credits

        A practical approach to meal planning and preparation, with the goal of a healthy diet, is the focus of this full-year course.  This is a laboratory work experience where students will prepare nutritious recipes as they study each level of the food pyramid.  Other topics covered are: eating disorders, kitchen design and career opportunities in the many fields of food preparation.

 

FOODS II                                           Grades 10, 11, 12                                           5 Credits

PREREQUISITE: Foods I

        This full year course provides a variety of practical learning experiences for advanced students.  Nutrition principles, small and large quantity food preparation techniques, and more advanced food preparation techniques are offered to the creative cook in Foods 2.  The Ginger Bread House construction and design project allows students the opportunity to create something special and creative.  Diets, meal management budgeting and consumerism concerns will be explored, as well as career opportunities in the institutional, hospitality and food service industry.

 

WORLD CUISINE                               Grades 10, 11, 12                                        2 ½ Credits

PREREQUISITE: Foods I

        Come on a world tour!!!  In World Cuisine you will cook and sample many foods from around the world.  Join us and explore the cultural foods, cooking techniques, and customs of other countries and regions.

CAREERS WITH CHILDREN & FAMILIES     Grades 9, 10, 11, 12                                    5 Credits

        The purpose of this course is to allow students to examine closely and experience a variety of careers involving children and family life.  Each marking period a different cluster of careers will be explored including:  Health Care (nursing, counselor, hearing specialist, physical and speech therapist), Law Enforcement (juvenile court system, police and probation officers, social worker), and Design and Advertising careers related to the development of children’s television, toys, music, software, books and puppetry.  Not only will the student gain valuable insight into unique careers, but the curriculum will also encourage creativity through projects and trips.  This course is in accordance with core curriculum requirements for career education and workplace readiness standards.

 


EDUCATION FOR PARENTHOOD     Grades 10, 11, 12                                                5 Credits

        This course will combine classroom work in child development with observation and participation with community children in the child-development lab.  Students will develop insights into relationships with the child in the family, community, and society that will encourage them to become informed, successful parents.  Careers in the expanding child-care field will be explored.

 

TEACHING YOUNG CHILDREN        Grades 11, 12                                                             10 Credits

        This two-period per day course prepares students for a career in teaching and child-care services. While gaining an understanding of human development and psychology, the students work with and observe preschoolers in the specially equipped child-care laboratory.  Students will plan and operate a regular nursery school and explore a variety of occupations. Upon successful completion of the course, each student will receive a state approved child-care certificate.

 

LIFE MANAGEMENT                            Grade 10, 11, 12                                         2 ½ Credits

        Who are you?  Where are you going?  Are you really prepared to be on your own?  This semester course is designed to aide the student to meet the challenges of every day life, as well as how to make informed decisions.  Units of instruction include:  banking and credit, budgeting, insurance, consumer rights and responsibilities, taxes, resumes, employment applications, and interviewing techniques.

 

FASHION DESIGN                        Grades 9, 10, 11, 12                                                              5 Credits

        This full year course will introduce students to the principles of design as it pertains to fashion and personal wardrobe planning.  Students will develop the skills necessary to achieve their own personal and professional look.  They will also understand the influences of color, fabric construction and figure proportions as they relate to fashion design.  Students will study the concept of draping techniques, how to create silhouettes, and pattern designing.  This course will provide a sound foundation for future study in the many fields of the fashion industry.

 

 

 

INDUSTRIAL ARTS & TECHNOLOGY

       

The goal of the Industrial Arts and Technology Department is in keeping with the finest tradition of a comprehensive education – to serve all the needs of our student population.  Our sequential Drawing and Design curriculum is designed to meet the needs of those students planning to major in Engineering, Architecture, or Design.  Our extensive program in Woods and our Electricity course, allows students hands on opportunities to develop skills and achieve success.  All students can find a course suited to their needs and interests.

 

ARCHITECTURAL DRAWING AND DESIGN I     Grades 9, 10, 11, 12                            5 Credits

        If you are interested in the fields of Architecture, Engineering, Interior Design or Construction, you will benefit from this introductory course.  Topics covered will include basic terminology, architectural symbols, and environmental and ergonomic design considerations.  Students will design and draw plans showing elevations, structural considerations, room layout, interior decorating, and pictorial presentations.  Students will begin building a portfolio using CAD, Computer Aided Drafting.  This course is highly recommended for students planning to major in Engineering, Architecture, Commercial Art or Interior Design.

 

ARCHITECTURAL DRAWING AND DESIGN II      Grades 10, 11, 12                              5 Credits

PREREQUISITE: Architectural Drawing and Design I

        This elective is aimed at expanding the knowledge and skills developed in Architectural Drawing and Design I The students will complete drawings reflecting the electrical/mechanical aspects of architecture.  Students will become proficient on the CAD, (Computer Aided Drafting) system. The development of independent design ideas, as well as collaborative planning, is stressed. This course is highly recommended for students planning to major in Engineering, Architecture, Commercial Art or Interior Design.

 

ENGINEERING DRAFTING AND DESIGN I    Grades 9, 10, 11, 12                                  5 Credits

        This course introduces students to drafting instruments and their proper use for drawing and sketching. Course content will include visualization of views, geometric construction, and basic dimensioning.   Students will use design and analysis methods for problem solving and will learn to read and interpret blueprints; Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) is introduced. This course is strongly recommended for students planning to major in Engineering, Architecture, or Commercial Art.

       

ENGINEERING DRAFTING AND DESIGN II          Grades 10, 11, 12                                5 Credits

PREREQUISITE: Engineering Drafting and Design I

        This course offers students an opportunity to refine the drafting skills acquired in the first-year course, and introduces advanced AutoCAD commands and applications.  Content includes: shape description, applied geometry and advanced design concepts.          This class is strongly recommended for students planning to study Engineering, Architecture, or Commercial Art.

 

ADVANCED COMPUTER AIDED DESIGN       Grades 11, 12                                             5 Credits

PREREQUISITE: Engineering Drafting and Design I & II or Architectural Drawing and Design I & II.

        This advanced course teaches all drawing directly on an AutoCAD System.  Course content will include the language of industry, dimensioning, section drawings, drawings for numerical control, geometric tolerance, auxiliary views, and pictorial drawings.    This class is strongly recommended for students planning to study Engineering, Architecture, Commercial Art or Interior Design.

 

3-D STUDIO COMPUTERIZED RENDERING         Grade 12                                               5 Credits

PREREQUISITE: Advanced Computer Aided Design

        This advanced course introduces students to rendering techniques used by some of today’s leading industries for movie pre-visualization and architectural walk-through.  This is a definite requirement for anyone interested in animation, commercial art, or architectural modeling and rendering.

 

 

WOOD TECHNOLOGY I                    Grades 9, 10, 11, 12                                          5 Credits

        This course introduces the student to the fascinating field of wood technology.  The student will work with basic designs, create and interpret working drawings, compute board feet, and develop problem-solving skills. Students will gain practical, hands-on experience by designing a plan and then creating a finished wood project.  Proper planning procedures and strict observation of safety rules are stressed.   This course has great appeal for anyone who may enjoy working with wood as a hobby.

 

WOOD TECHNOLOGY II                     Grades 10, 11, 12                                           5 Credits

PREREQUISITE:  Wood Technology I

        Wood Technology II focuses on the many processes, materials, hand and power tools, and manufacturing procedures for wood.  The student will be introduced to basic house construction, as well as the construction of furniture.  Students will work with hardwoods, wipe-on finishes, and latex.  They will also explore the many career opportunities in the wood working area and related fields.

 

WOOD TECHNOLOGY III                      Grades 11, 12                                              5 Credits

PREREQUISITE:  Wood Technology II

        In this advanced course the student interested in woodworking will have an opportunity to develop his/her skills and work with wood processes used in building furniture and in the production of cabinets.

 

WOOD TECHNOLOGY IV              Grade 12                                                                         5 Credits

PREREQUISITE: Wood Technology III

        Wood Technology IV or “Cabinetmaking” is a mastery-level course and is an independent study of woodworking and wood properties.  Critical-thinking skills and problem-solving techniques are stressed as students expand on their prior years of wood training.   Project selection is the responsibility of the student with instructor approval.  

 

INTRODUCTION TO   ELECTRICAL TECHNOLOGY    Grades 9, 10, 11, 12                   5 Credits

        This comprehensive course is designed to introduce students to the basic principles of electricity and electronics.  A full range of topics, including Ohm’s Law, components, and electrical circuits and devices are covered.  A wide variety of hands-on applications are offered, including experiments that emphasize the practical aspects of electricity and electronics. 

 

HOUSE FRAMING AND CONSTRUCTION  Grades 10, 11, 12                                             5 Credits

PREREQUISITE:  Woods I or Architectural Drawing and Design I

     Interested in building your own home?  This course is designed to give students knowledge of home design and the construction industry.  Students will be challenged with designing and constructing a scale model.  Students will also develop on understanding of basic architectural principles and apply them to practical applications.  Scale modeling of a residence will lead to construction of a small structure, (i.e., outdoor shed).
