As the new director of special services I would like to introduce myself and take this opportunity to tell you how happy I am to be part of the Roxbury School District. The District employs nine Child Study Team members who comprise three Child Study Teams; each team is assigned to specific schools and each team member is designated as the case manager for specific students. A key role of the Case Manager is to serve as the liaison between the school, the student and the family while overseeing the student’s program. If you have questions regarding your student’s program and would like to speak to the case manager, you can contact them by calling my office or sending an e-mail directly to them. The Special Services teaching staff provides a full range of services and programs in district schools.
Our two Preschool Disabilities programs enables the Special Services staff to
work with the majority of the Preschool Disabled students within the district. Self-contained classes,
In Class Support and Resource Center programs are provided for
students from kindergarten through high school. Teacher Aides are
employed to provide assistance to students in our district programs. The Speech and Language staff consists of six Speech
Therapists who provide therapy in all of the district’s seven schools. A
teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing is employed to work with students who
qualify for these services. In-Class Support, Pre- teaching, and Replacement
Instruction provided by the Teacher of the Deaf has enabled the majority of
students who have Auditory Impairments to remain in their neighborhood schools. Two full-time Occupational Therapists provide service
to students in district programs. The Occupational Therapists are also available
to provide consultation to the teaching staff.
Presently, the District does not employ a Physical Therapist. Whenever
possible, the District contracts with state approved agencies to provide
Physical Therapy services within District programs. However, in some instances
it may be necessary for a student to receive Physical Therapy in an approved
setting after school. The position of Transition Coordinator was established last
year. The Transition Coordinator is
responsible for assisting parents and students prepare for the students’
transition from high school to their post high school life. If you have
questions regarding Transition services, you may contact the Transition
Coordinator by calling the high school. The Special Services Website offers parents a wealth of information regarding District programs, services, staff, and frequently asked questions. The website also contains important links to various state agencies and special education resources. A listing of district extra-curricular activities and miscellaneous information can also be found at the website. New on our website is the "Headline" page. This page will be providing you with the newest information about our department. Please visit it often to check for news and events in special education. In addition to website the department is in the process of creating a Special Education Information Resource Center. This center will be located at our office on 25 Meeker Street. We look forward to the "Grand Opening" soon. If you have resources that you would like to have listed or placed in the resource center please call my office. Please remember that everyone in the Special Services
Department is here to assist you and your child. Please do not hesitate to
call me or any member of the special education staff if you have any questions regarding the Special Services programs
or if you would like an additional copy of Parental Rights in Special Education
or of the
New Jersey Administrative Code Title 6A Chapter 14. I look forward to meeting many of you during the remaining part of the school year. Sincerely, Diane Mari
