Engineering for Kids Programs (Grades PreK-5)

    Kids ages 4 to 14 are introduced to Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Education through programs such as after-school programs, classes, camps, workshops, and birthday parties. They also offer programs for home schooled students, scouts events, in-school field trips and parent's night out events!

    These programs are open to Roxbury and non-Roxbury residents!  

     

    WINTER 1 SESSION

    black and white test tube image JUNIOR CHEMICAL ENGINEERING (PreK-Grade 2) - Crazy Concoctions

    The Junior Chemical Engineering classes introduce our youngest engineers to fundamental concepts of solids, liquids, and solutions. Students investigate the properties of several crazy concoctions and make their own samples of bubbles, play dough, flub, and more!

    During the Electrical Engineering classes, students use the Engineering Design Process to design, create, test, and refine basic electronics and circuits. Students experiment with Snap Circuits® to discover the capabilities of major electronic components. In addition, students build their own flashlights and explore the world of magnetic energy by building their own Magnetic Levitation vehicle.

    Building a house to withstand the Big, Bad Wolf is where the fun begins in Junior Civil. This class is centered on exploring the concepts of building and construction through hands-on exploration and design. Students explore the engineering behind skyscrapers, bridges, roads, and more in this fun and engaging experience.

    During the Civil Engineering classes, students use the Engineering Design Process to design, create, test, and refine a balsawood bridge designed to withstand the greatest force. The examine several types of bridge designs and discover how the forces of tension, compression, bending, torsion, and shear are distributed throughout their structures.

    SPRING SESSION

    JUNIOR ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING (PreK-Grade 2) - TBD

    The Junior Electrical Engineering classes introduce our youngest engineers to fundamental concepts of static electricity, basic electrical circuits and magnetism. Through open and focused activities, students explore how to build circuits, use switches and LEDs, study the behavior of magnets and more!

    DATE: (6 Weeks on Thursdays) May 2, 9, 16, 23, 30, June 6, 2019
    TIMES:  5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. (1 hour)
    LOCATION: Franklin School, 8 Meeker Street, Succasunna, NJ - Room: #24 Art/Music Room
    COST: $145 per student

    During the Industrial Engineering classes, students use the Engineering Design Process to design, create, test, and refine efficient systems for production. Students explore foundational concepts of industrial engineering such as assembly lines, safety, stamping, sorting, and distributing materials. Students see just how fun and creative industrial engineering can be as they create their own ice cream factory and 3-D copies of designs.

    The Roxbury Community School is self-sufficient and a course/program must pay for itself. If there are not enough registrants, the course/program will be cancelled. The Coordinator reserves the right to remove from class those individuals who have not paid tuition.  
     
    There are no refunds for winter, spring, summer, or fall courses/camps AFTER the program starts. All cancellations must be received in writing to comschool@roxbury.org at least seven days prior to the start of the class for a refund. After that date, there will be no refunds.
