Kindergarten Frequently Asked Questions
- First Day of School:
Thursday, September 5, 2019. Doors open at 8:50 a.m.
What should I do before school starts?
- Enroll in the SchoolKidz School Supply Program if interested.
- Complete forms in Genesis in August
- Join the Jefferson Elementary School PTA Facebook Page
- Visit the Jefferson Elementary page
- Attend the Jefferson Elementary Open House on August 29th
When will I know what classroom my child is in?
There are three Kindergarten classes at Jefferson. All class assignments will be posted in Genesis along with bus routes in late August. Jefferson Elementary will have an Open House in August. Students can view their classroom and get to know the school. If School Supply Kits were ordered, they will be in the classroom as well. Please do NOT call the Main Office to try to find out your student’s class assignment. Mrs. Bauder is extremely busy preparing for the first day of school.
Can I request a specific teacher or for my child to be placed with a friend?
Jefferson does not take requests for a specific teacher or classroom or friends. However, if your child has any special needs, please be sure to notify Mrs. Cosgrove at email@example.com.
What should I pack in my child’s backpack?
Kindergartners have snack time in the afternoon. We ask you to provide your child with a healthy snack. Fruit, vegetables, cheese, a sandwich, crackers, dried fruit, seaweed, and unsweetened cereal are all good choices using the Approved Snack List provided by Jefferson’s School Nurse, Mrs. Zenna. Please label the food for snack or send to school in a different bag as many times students will eat all their food during lunch and will not have snack during snack time.
For lunch, either you must pack a lunch for your child, or your child may eat the school lunch. (See below for information about the school lunch program.)
What does my child need at school?
Please label your child’s jackets, fleeces, vests, hats, and any other clothing that may be taken off during the day. You would be amazed by how much unlabeled clothing ends up in the lost and found and is never claimed.
What should I do if my child will be late for school?
Please walk your child to the Main Office and sign them in for school. The student will be taken to their classroom by office staff.
What should I do if my child is sick or cannot attend school?
Please call Jefferson’s School Nurse, Mrs. Zenna 973-584-8957. Please provide your child’s name and classroom teacher and the reason why your child will not be at school. You must call the nurse's office every day that your child is absent.
What if I need to pick my child up before the school day ends?
If you need to pick up your child early, for example for a doctor or dentist appointment, go to the Main Office, where you will be asked to sign out your child and give the reason for the early pickup. Your child will be called down to the office. Please send an email to their teacher and the office notifying them of the early pickup and provide the time.
What happens at lunchtime?
Lunch for the Kindergartners starts at 11:00 a.m. The teacher walks the students to the designated lunch area. Then adult lunch monitors take over the supervision. The children eat their packed lunches or school lunches with their class. At the end of lunch recess, the Kindergarten teachers pick up their classes and the lunch boxes take the children to their next activity.
You will receive information about the school lunch program (how to pay, qualifying for reduced–cost or free lunch, etc.). Children will order their lunch in the morning with their teacher. Payment can be made through cash or through the School Bucks card program.
How does afternoon pickup work?
At 3:20 p.m. the bell rings to signal the end of the school day. Aftercare is dismissed to the cafeteria and walkers are dismissed to the gym. If your child is an everyday walker, please send a note stating so at the beginning of the school year. Special Walkers (on a special occasion) must email firstname.lastname@example.org and the classroom teacher in the morning with the person’s name that is picking them up. All other students will be dismissed by bus. Please have your ID available for pick-up.
Where can I get more information about my child’s daily schedule?
Back–to–School Night is held in September. At Back–to–School night, you will meet with your child’s teacher in the classroom and receive more detailed information about your child’s daily schedule. In addition to the standard Kindergarten curriculum of reading, writing, and math workshops, the children have numerous enriching activities.
How can I get more information? How do I find out about school events and classroom events?
Students receive a blue Koala folder that they will bring home daily. Any information including homework will be sent home in the folder.
Each classroom has at least one Room Parent who coordinates classroom events and volunteer opportunities, disseminates information, and serves as the liaison between the teacher and parents.
Check out the Jefferson Website. The site is full of information. The site is updated regularly. Please check it frequently.

How can I get involved?
- Join the PTA. Attend PTA meetings. Meetings are included on the PTA Events Calendar as well as the Jefferson Elementary Calendar and reminders are sent out before the meeting.
- Serve on a PTA committee. At the first PTA meeting and during the first weeks of school, there will be signup sheets for all kinds of volunteer opportunities. We need help with donations for special events, volunteers for events, chairs/co-chairs, etc. Any help is greatly appreciated and welcome! All members of the PTA Board are working parents volunteering their time.
- Participate! Attend Jefferson events. Bring your children to Jefferson Events! There is a variety of events for everyone to enjoy.
You will find that we have a very inviting, supportive, inclusive, and warm parent community.
