STEMRox FTC (Grades 7-12)

  • STEM Rox Logo with that wording and a blue and gold shield with various STEAM images STEMROX is excited to announce our inaugural FTC Robotics Team! Over the course of the next 3 months, selected students in grades 7-12 will put into practice Engineering, Innovation, Mechanical, and Computer Science skills in order to compete in this year's First Tech Challenge Robotics Competition. The Competition Challenge changes each season and will be revealed this year on September 8th.

Unlike some of the other offerings through the Roxbury Community School, this program is a Select Educational Travel Team and, although we encourage students of all skill levels to apply, there is no guarantee that your student will make the team. Due to FTC team restrictions, we will be accepting between 10 and 15 students to the team this year. Students currently in grades 7-12 are welcome to apply online and come try out! Tryouts for the team will take place on **Monday, September 17th from 6pm-8pm** in the Eisenhower Middle School STEAM Lab (Room 31- across from the Gym restrooms). During this tryout, students will be given various technical and nontechnical tasks to complete both individually and in a small group in order for our coaches/mentors to best evaluate the applicants.

All students who try out will be informed by week’s end (Friday, September 21st) whether they were accepted or not. Starting October 1st, the Team will meet every Monday and Wednesday night through our final competition, which most likely will be the beginning of February. That means students will have the opportunity for roughly 30 meetings as well as be entered into three (3) competitions (Dates of which are TBD as we are required to apply for them and not guaranteed specific dates. Last year we competed on December 3, January 7, and February 3). A list of all New Jersey Competition dates can be found here. As we get closer to competitions, meeting days/times may need to be adjusted in order to better prepare for the event, however, those will all be communicated the week prior, or as soon as possible beforehand. Lastly, while it is not mandatory to be at every session, it is highly recommended so that your child can get the most out of their FIRST experience!

This program is open to Roxbury and non-Roxbury residents.

    COST: $500 per student*

*Upon signing up, there will be a $250 deposit required. That deposit will hold your place for the tryout and in the event, your child is not selected, it will be refunded to you. However, if you are accepted to the team that initial $250 will be considered your first payment and the balance of $250 will be due by November 1st. The reason for the deposit is to ensure serious candidates are applying as well as can help us pay for Competition registration and equipment in order for us to have supplies for the very first meeting on October 1st. These funds will ensure that the Team has enough to purchase all needed equipment and robot supplies throughout the competition season when parts break or when something predictably but unexpectedly goes awry on the robot.

    What's Included:

    • Students will be taught by some of the area's best robotics and STEM Mentors, in addition to some industry professionals and guest speakers. This is one of the reasons for meeting at night, to ensure the availability of these professionals.
    • All equipment for team meetings and for the competition, including robot building materials.
    • Each team member will also be given a team jersey to wear at competitions.

    What's Not Included:

    • Students/Families will be responsible for their own travel to and from team meetings and competitions.
    • Travel, accommodations, and entry to anything beyond local tournaments. For instance, if our team is fortunate enough to make it into the State, Regional, or National Tournaments there may be additional fees which will be discussed at that time.
