Paint and Pizza a big hit at Last SAIL Academy
Paint and Pizza at Last SAIL Academy
ROXBURY, NJ (February 1, 2019) – Roxbury Schools latest Student Academic Intervention and Learning (SAIL) Parent Academy for Franklin and Nixon families saw its biggest turn out yet on January 17th with more than 230 parents and children coming out for paint and pizza.
These families are afforded this opportunity through Title I funding which is based on the number of students enrolled in the free and reduced lunch programs. Parents and students from these two schools in Roxbury Township started the evening off with Pizza catered by Maschio’s, Roxbury’s Food Services provider.
Following dinner, families got to meet and work with district art teachers Angelina Neabore from Franklin and Nixon Schools, Rose Abbey from Jefferson and Kennedy Schools, and Izzy Speronza from Roxbury High School.
Kelly Freund, SAIL program coordinator and Franklin and Nixon technology teacher shared “Parents were so excited to have a blank 16x18 canvas to create a picture with their child that they would have forever.”
Families with students in grades 2-4 worked together to paint snowflake pictures while families with little ones in Kindergarten and first grade painted winter trees.
The district’s purpose of holding SAIL Parent Academics is to educate parents on the things going on in their child’s elementary school and education. These academics were designed to make parents feel comfortable and welcome in their child’s school and to provide help for them in the easiest and most convenient ways possible. The district strives to remove any possible obstacles from participating including having translator services available for our non-English speaking families, free childcare for not just the child in the elementary school but for any age, as well as providing a hot meal.
The last academy will be parent/child night where families will participate together for Math & Movement. Information regarding the upcoming date will be shared at these two schools as the dates approach.
