Rox-THON 2021 is on! Help Support the Fight Against Pediatric Cancer
ROXBURY, NJ (April 16, 2021) – Roxbury High School’s Rox-THON received the green light to hold an in-person THON event this year for Roxbury High School students only. The high school club was founded with the ideals of supporting families and donating funds for pediatric cancer and this year the determination to continue with the cause has been unwavering.
Over $300,000 has been raised in the past seven years with the majority of the efforts generated by student leadership.
Rox-THON will continue to give the majority of the raised funds to Goryeb Children’s Hospital at Morristown Medical Center, keeping money within the local community, and a portion to Four Diamonds which supports the larger community for families who are battling pediatric cancer.
“The impact this organization has had in both our community and in the lives of so many children has been the most inspiring and life-changing experience for me,” shared Ileana Gonzalez President of the organization. “As a senior, this very impact is the reason I believe it is so important to support Rox-THON and donate to our cause.”
“It’s the students who continue to push the envelope to see the funds grow from year to year,” said Michael Gottfried, advisor of the club. “The students are the ones pounding the pavement and making the calls to do something bigger than themselves.”
Rox-THON, formally mini-THON, is a branch of the better-known Penn State’s THON that raises money for pediatric cancer. Two years ago, the Roxbury club branched into its own organization in order to keep the majority of the raised funds locally.
“While this year may look different than the past, it’s the purpose of the event that stays the same,” said Margery Richman, co-advisor. “We’re excited to be able to hold a modified on-campus event since last year the event was held virtually.”
“Knowing that money is being raised to help families so that they don’t have to worry about any financial expenses while their child receives treatment, motivates us to help,” said Rachel Feliciano, vice president of the club. “Whether it’s medical bills or housing, the only thing families need to think about is their child. How great is that?”
The event is scheduled for Friday, May 21st at Roxbury High School. There will be two cohorts of participants: Freshmen and Sophomores will participate from 3:00-6:00 pm, and Juniors and Seniors from 7:00-10:00 pm. May 22 is the scheduled rain date.
The logistics for the event are being carefully planned with the administration, however, “attendees can still expect the energy and activities to remain consistent with the traditions that have been established including music, games, guest speakers, and dancing,” said Gottfried.
To support the cause, donate online or send a check (made payable to “RHS Rox-THON”) to Roxbury High School Attn: Mike Gottfried, 1 Bryant Dr. Succasunna, NJ 07876. Any inquiries can be directed to firstname.lastname@example.org.
