RHS Holds National Art Honor Society Induction and Spring Break Into Art Show

ROXBURY, NJ (April 16, 2019) – Roxbury High School held its first National Art Honor Society (NAHS) induction ceremony on Thursday, April 11th. Twenty-nine high school students, who demonstrated an outstanding ability and interest in art, became members. The NAHS promotes the highest standards in art scholarship, character, and service by bringing art advocacy and education to the attention of the school and community.

Acceptance into NAHS requires students to maintain a grade point average of 3.0, successfully complete two years of high school art classes and be recommended by an art teacher. Members are required to participate in upcoming art events and shows and submit their best work for review and display.

Best in Show Winner, Stephanie Lemanis Thursday evening was a celebration of our talented artists. NAHS advisor, Nancy Valenta, introduced the 2018/2019 executive officers, seniors Nicole Miklinski, Rebecca Weng, James Sullivan, along with junior Abby Zaplishny.

There were musical performances by James Sullivan, Anna Kisatsky, Julia Malczynski, and Rachelle Vassoler. There was a poetry reading by Erin Luby about her photograph on display at the show. In addition, guest speaker Professor Keith Smith of the Community College of Morris was some of the highlights of the evening.

All NAHS members had artwork on display along with the finalists of the “Spring Break Into Art Show”. Out of the 452 students enrolled in a visual arts class, 80 students were selected as finalists in the six categories.  Roxbury High School Fine and Performing Arts Lead Teacher Renee Zengel’s AP Studio Art students were the judges for the artwork submitted. Awards were presented in many categories, including a “Best in Show” award for a charcoal and graphite self-portrait by junior Stephanie Lemanis.

We congratulate all the National Art Honor Society members and the Spring Break Into Art Show finalists for their creative abilities, talents and dedicated spirit to the pursuit of art now and in the future.
