ROXBURY, NJ (April 1, 2021) – Franklin Elementary School held its second annual “Fox in Socks” Sock Drive this year during Read Across America Week, March 1st through March 5th, to benefit Roxbury Social Services. The Sock Drive was organized by Franklin School’s ISL Reading Teacher, Kathy Diaz.

As Mrs. Diaz was watching a television program, she realized that people donate all kinds of clothes and you never see anyone donating any socks. Socks are considered a basic need. Her daughter then did some volunteer work and noticed the same thing. There were no socks donated. So Mrs. Diaz decided to create the drive during Read Across America Week to do just that, collect socks for people who need them.

The connection to the story “Fox in Socks” is one of Mrs. Diaz’s favorite Dr. Seuss books with rich rhyming words and fun illustrations of socks!

“What better way to do that than to wear your favorite pair of bright, bold, striped, and mismatched socks and share a pair,” shared Diaz.

Last year’s Sock Drive was just before the district closed due to the pandemic. They were able to donate though a large bag of socks to Roxbury Social Services.

This year, Mrs. Diaz was granted approval to run the drive again from Franklin Principal Lisa Ferrare and the amount of socks doubled!

Students, staff, and faculty donated socks for children and adults, from white to spots, to ducks, to stripes! What a great way to give back to the community and share a pair of socks!
