Roxbury Schools Provides Transportation Safety Education Program

Roxbury Schools Provides Transportation Safety Education Program

ROXBURY, NJ (March 2, 2017) – Roxbury Township students in grades K-6 will be participating in a safety education program that includes pedestrian safety and rules for riding the school bus in accordance with 6A:27-11.4.

Janine Byrnes, Roxbury Township Public Schools Transportation Director mentioned that “this program will bring an interactive approach to everyday bus safety. Proper crossing, loading and unloading the bus, positive behavior, emergency procedures and evacuations will be the focus.”

The district has offered this program over the years and Byrnes feels the importance of bringing it back to stay.

“Educating the students on bus safety is critical for years of safe transportation to and from school. I observed the Safety Program at Jefferson Township Schools under the direction of Shannon Wilson, Transportation Supervisor. After my observation, bringing the program to Roxbury Schools was a must. I shared the value of implementing the program with Roxbury Schools Superintendent, Loretta Radulic, and we agreed to bring the program to Roxbury. Not only was the program enjoyable for the students, valuable lessons were taught. I am formatting the program to accommodate the Roxbury Community.”

Every student will attend the program at each of the K-6 schools even if they do not ride a bus to school as buses are used for trips and extracurricular activities.

“The program is interactive and time is built-in for students to ask questions. A greater understanding of the need for rules related to buses will be established. The staff will benefit daily with better loading and unloading procedures and better behavior on field trips. The community as a whole will benefit as valuable safety training is implemented,” explained Byrnes.

This program will be implemented in the 2017/2018 school year. Bus safety month is October; all schools will be scheduled for the program in October 2017. The program will be held every October moving forward.

All Roxbury Township Public School drivers hold valid CDL licenses with proper endorsements. Department trainings are held throughout the year to provide staff with updated safety protocols pertaining to school transportation.

The Roxbury Transportation Department is committed to safe and efficient busing for the students.

“The community will benefit from the commitment of continued excellence in the Roxbury Transportation Department. We take pride in transporting the Roxbury children safely to and from school,” shared Byrnes.
