Franklin Renews Its Sights on Recycling in 2018

Franklin School's Recycling Corner from last year

ROXBURY, NJ (January 29, 2018) – Franklin Elementary School along with the Roxbury Township Public Schools is renewing its pledge to help go green in the new year.

Franklin’s newly formed Green Team is hitting the ground running with the help of their PTA. The school has updated its Recycling Rally Program and is teaming up once again with New Jersey-based TerraCycle. The school will be collecting a variety of products in 2018. Collections will be the first Friday of every month starting February 2nd.

TerraCycle Logo The recycling corner will be getting even bigger as the community is encouraged to take part too by collecting these items and dropping them off on the first Friday of the month from 9:00-10:30 a.m. at Franklin School located at 8 Meeker Street in Succasunna.

The items being collected this year include:

  • Barilla® Ready Pasta pouches – Barilla® Ready Pasta pouches
  • FLONASE® nasal spray and cartridges – FLONASE® outer plastic packaging and empty FLONASE® nasal spray cartridges
  • Late July Snack bags – July Snacks packaging
  • Colgate® Oral Care –any brand of toothpaste tubes and caps, toothbrushes, toothpaste cartons, toothbrush outer packaging, and floss containers.
  • Entenmann’s® Little Bites® – Entenmann’s Little Bites plastic pouches
  • Febreze Aerosol Recycling – empty Febreze aerosol containers
  • GoGo squeeZ® – Healthy snack plastic pouches and caps
  • Personal Care and Beauty – Haircare packaging such as shampoo caps, conditioner caps, hair gel tubes and caps, hairspray triggers, and hair paste caps. Skin care packaging such as lip balm tubes and caps, soap dispensers and tubes, body wash caps, lotion dispensers and caps. Cosmetics packaging such as lipstick cases, lip gloss tubes, mascara tubes, eye shadow cases, bronzer cases, foundation packaging, powder cases, eyeliner cases, eyeliner pencils, eyeshadow tubes, concealer tubes, concealer sticks, and lip liner pencils.
  • Solo® Cup – ONLY #6 rigid plastic cups

Many of these items are not designated as mandatory recyclable items per state law and would otherwise end up in landfills or incinerators. Collecting them for Franklin School allows these items to be turned into something else like benches, picnic tables, and bike racks, just to name a few.

As a fun incentive, each class will get a garbage bag to collect the items from the kids and then drop it off at Franklin’s green corner. The class that collects the most each month will win a “Class Choice Day” where the children will decide with their teacher what they would like to do like having a hat day, crazy sock day, crazy hair day, etc.

Flyers regarding this program were distributed to students in January and a video clip regarding upcycling was shown from

Franklin School won a classroom party through a nationwide recycling contest last year called “Entenmann’s Little Bites: Make the Pledge Promotion”. Franklin was eligible for this prize due to their recycling efforts and their partnership with TerraCycle.

TerraCycle offers free recycling programs funded by brands, manufacturers, and retailers around the world to help collect and recycle hard-to-recycle waste.

Franklin School’s recycling program is part of a district-wide initiative. The district has been working for the past few years on earning Sustainable Jersey for Schools certification at each school and at the district level.

Involvement and participation in programs like these help the school to achieve that goal while educating its students on how to be better global citizens.
