Roxbury’s JSA Attends Mid-Atlantic Winter Congress

Roxbury JSA in DC at the National Mall

ROXBURY, NJ (March 15, 2019) – The Roxbury Chapter of Junior State of America (JSA) attended the annual Mid-Atlantic Winter Congress in Washington, D.C. from February 22-24.

JSA is a national student-run politics and government club, and the Winter Congress offers students from around the Mid-Atlantic region, Texas, and Puerto Rico the opportunity to participate in a model congress in our nation’s capital.

This year’s congress was attended by Roxbury High School Juniors Hailey Aguino, Hallie Cowan, Angie Gutierrez-Gonzalez, Valentina Negret, Serah Njoroge, and Noelle Rowe and Seniors Christopher Lange and Michal Ners.

Advisors Nicole Barbato and James Connolly explained what the students do while in D.C., saying “School chapters write and submit bills to be debated at the congress. This year’s bills dealt with issues ranging from gun legislation, social media, invasive species, congressional term limits, and presidential war powers, to name only a few.”

“Following a day at the National Mall on Friday, where students visited the Capitol Building, Library of Congress, and Supreme Court, there was a keynote address regarding federal debt and deficits to open the Congress. Saturday and Sunday consisted of students debating and amending proposed bills in legislative sessions.”

All activities are student-led and administered. Ultimately, students vote on whether or not to adopt the bills into law.

“Afterwards, the students expressed how much fun they had experiencing the legislative process, particularly the lively debates and discussions about these important issues,” shared Barbato and Connolly.

The JSA Club at Roxbury High School meets every Wednesday after-school. Any Roxbury High School student interested in government, politics, and current events can attend a meeting at any time during the year.
