Pi Day Activity at LRS Leads to Food Donation

LRS Students Box Up Can Goods from Pi Activity

ROXBURY, NJ (April 16, 2019) – On March 14th, sixth-grade math students at Lincoln/Roosevelt School in Roxbury Township discovered that while Pi equals 3.14 and on and on, it can also provide many cans of food to Roxbury Social Services.

Each student donated at least one can of food to participate in the lesson. Sixth grade Math Teacher, Liz Bonis shared how, “Students wrapped a piece of string around the can, and then cut the string (more than once) to match the diameter of the can. Guess what? They ended up with three equal pieces of string and one much smaller piece; 3.14!”

Students donated their cans to the local food pantry once the lesson was over.

Bonis added, “The cans donated by about 250 students filled two grocery carts to almost overflowing. The food was a welcome donation.”

Ed Hade, food pantry volunteer, happily accepted the food saying, “We don’t get a lot of donations at this time of year, so this comes at a perfect time.”

The math students at Lincoln Roosevelt learned that PI is 3.14, and even more - their donations can support and feed a community.
