ROXBURY, NJ (April 18, 2019) – Students at Jefferson Elementary School were treated to a special author visit thanks to the Jefferson School PTA. On Monday, children’s book author, Lisa Funari Willever came to speak about what it takes to be an author.

Fourth graders at the school were ready for her visit as they conducted an author study on her leading up to the event. They asked inquisitive questions about her career as an author and how she comes up with her characters and places included in her books, especially her Nicky Fifth’s chapter book series.

This popular series at Jefferson School follows the adventures of Nicky Fifth at all different places throughout New Jersey. This particular series includes specific spots and people only found in New Jersey.

Media Specialist, Jefferson PTA President and VP with author Lisa Funari Willever One student asked about Sam’s restaurant mentioned in one of her books. She confirmed that Sam is a real person as well as the restaurant. “Often times, schools will take class trips to the Old Barracks Museum and then they go to the Statehouse and then they’ll stop at DeLorenzo’s Pizza to have Sam sign their books.”

As part of this day, each student in the school would be leaving with one of two of her books. The preschool to first grade were getting “A Glove of Their Own” purchased by the PTA while Funari Willever brought “Nicky Fifth’s Fit” books for the second through fourth grade. Teachers at Jefferson were also getting the Teacher’s Guide to “Nicky Fifth’s New Jersey”.

As a former teacher, Funari Willever is a strong believer in education and has teamed up with the NJEA to promote education literacy and New Jersey. Each year at the NJEA Convention more than 50,000 books are given to kids and teachers.

Jefferson Media Specialist Katey McAuliffe extended her gratitude by saying, “Thank you to the PTA for sponsoring today’s author visit with Lisa Funari Willever! The children had a great time and learned all about what it takes to be an author.”
