Bringing the outdoors in with a tent and picnic area in the VISTA class

ROXBURY, NJ (October 4, 2019) – Vista teacher, Lisa Corliss is bringing the outdoors into her classroom this year at Roxbury High School while embracing the district’s goal of promoting health, wellness, and mindfulness.

VISTA class set up for camping “Many of my students have not had much opportunity to explore the outdoors so I decided to bring the outdoors in. We will relate the skills we are learning in science, math, and critical thinking combined with elements of mindfulness and social-emotional learning to camping. I hope to be able to get them outdoors for hiking excursions and possibly to even go fishing in the spring,” explained Corliss.

The students so far are enjoying alternative working spaces and listening to the sounds of birds, wind through the trees, and lake water.

“They are excited about the possibility of getting outside, exploring some trails, building their own tents, and maybe learning to fish. It should be quite an adventure!”

Corliss teaches students in grades 9-12 in the Vista program that’s designed for students who have multiple disabilities, including those students with physical and cognitive impairments. Emphasis is placed on functional academics and social skills that are unique to the students’ individual needs.
