ROXBURY, NJ (January 17, 2020) – Over the past few months, students in the Early Act Club at Nixon Elementary School have been learning about helping others and giving back.

In doing so, these students held two drives for two very deserving organizations.

Before the holidays, students held a toy and food drive to support Roxbury Social Services. Donations were made by the Nixon School families for this cause.

Nixon Early Act Food and Toy Drive Nixon Early Act Club Advisor Kerry Hamberger shared, “We decided as a group to donate the toys and food to social services for the collection they did.”

Then in January, thanks to a connection from the Nixon School Nurse Catherine Leonard, students were visited by Michael Boll from the NJ Veterans Network. “Mrs. Leonard used to work with Mr. Boll and knew of the charity work he did. Early Act was doing this for Veterans Day and chose this organization to help and honor our local military veterans,” said Hamberger.

NJ Veterans Network provides Veterans with a better quality of life with donations of housing, cars, job assistance, and mental health services. Boll spoke to the students about being a Marine and about supporting our veterans when they return home through his charity.

Leading up to the January 8th visit, the Early Act Club held a collection of household items, toiletries, art supplies and cards for the Veterans. The students presented six baskets to him that will be given to six women veterans that are being given makeovers at Mendham High School in the next few weeks.

“We look forward to supporting Mr. Boll and our Veterans again soon.”

Nixon’s Early Act Club is a school-wide service club for the elementary students and is sponsored by the Roxbury Rotary Club.
