ROXBURY, NJ (May 16, 2019) – Roxbury High School will be adding a new art course to its program of studies this fall. This new course, Comic Design Production, kicked off earlier this month when the Roxbury High School’s Visual Arts Department hosted long-time Illustrator, Mike Moran as its latest artist-in-residence.

Amanda Olsen and Madison Solano working with Illustrator Mike Moran Darwin Vargas with Illustrator Mike Moran Moran is an illustrator and character designer whose humor illustration has been used by really fun clients throughout the years like American Express, Simon & Schuster, Highlights, Scholastic Inc., Major League Baseball, WWE, Ranger Rick, The Grammys, among many others. He has worked as a professional illustrator in New Jersey for the past 30 years; with his works being in major magazines, newspapers, animation, children’s books, toy packaging, and more.

Roxbury’s Visual Arts Lead Teacher Renee Zengel shared, “We thought having a professional illustrator come in to work with them would be a great way to introduce students to the new course option.”

Adding, “I reached out to Barbara Ruether from The Morris Arts Council to find the perfect fit for us and that is exactly what we got with Mike Moran. He seamlessly entered the classrooms, made connections with the students, and had fun too! The students created their own small comics that told a fun, whimsical story.”

In the new Comic Design Production class, students will be guided through every step of the process; learning character creation and development, storytelling and sequence, backgrounds and environments, layout design, and print production. Alongside this, students will become accomplished in Adobe Creative Cloud programs and Wacom Digital Drawing Tablets to keep them on par with industry standards.
